GRoot85's 4Runner Build-Up Thread
Hello everyone. After being without a Toyota for 3 years and deeply missing my 85 Red x-cab SR5(see below).
I decided to search for another. Keeping my family in mind, I went with a 4Runner. After quite a long search I found the one; an 1985 SR5 159k miles with power windows, cruise, and chrome package. Of course given the age it has its fair share of issues but none I can’t fix. The previous owner replaced the engine with a 93 22re and hacked the engine harness. I will be going over everything on this making sure it is near perfect.
New Rig
So far I have ordered:
22RE PERFORMACE STAGE 2.5 with dual row timing chain, Intake manifold powder coated to match, oversized throttle body, and flow matched injectors. Looking at a 16 to 18 Week completion time
Marlin Crawler Heavy Duty W56A with the short throw shifter; 9 to 10 week turnaround.
Front and Rear axle service kit
Oversized Clutch Upgrade Combo Kit
And a few miscellaneous install parts.
Old Man Emu Full suspension system medium duty
BFG TA KO’S 31X10.50R15; First thing to arrive of course.
I have also ordered several OEM parts from Conicelli Toyota.
Parts to be ordered:
LC Engineering header
Performance radiator with electric fans
Energy suspension bushings
The list goes on and on.
Parts needed:
SR5 shift knob
Sunroof shade insert, current one installed is dark gray.
Sun visors
New or near new rear step bumper
Headliner for cab (tears throughout) and removable top is completely gone (not sure what fabric to get)none left to compare.
I'm sure I'll come up with other stuff
Looking forward to sharing the build and any advice you guys can share.
Geoffrey

Both are great looking trucks. You have or had in the past. Looking forward to your runner build. Most likely they hacked the Injector harness and that is an easy piece to replace. Finding one is the tough part. Welcome to Yotatech and looking forward to your build.

Finally getting this thing done
After a very long hiatus and several shops failing to get anything done with the build (one of the shops wrecked it into a wall) what nightmare this has been.
I finally decided to get the project started again and finish it this time.
While attending a car show I met a gentleman who had his Ford restored and it was perfect.
Midsouthern Restorations is who performed the work and after a quick phone call we scheduled to meet. Once I toured their shop I knew this would be the place.
I’m still beyond busy with life but would like to share where I’m at.
Here are the photos when AL got it to his shop.

Parts availability
What a difference 6 years has made, finding parts for this thing has gotten tough. I’m hoping to get help
in securing quite a few needed items here.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
I’ll post more of the progress tomorrow.

Nice, don't see too many frame off restorations here on YT, I see a lot on the ih8mud forum for the FJ40s. Looks like this new shop is making some great progress.

I’ve always loved the 85 Toyota 4Runner & Pickups and wanted to have one as close to perfect as I can get. So here we are...Lol

It looks really great!
Give us the list of parts you need, maybe we can help.
NOS parts are hard to find.

The shop who “removed” the engine took everything that was attached, so as good as my guys are they are not entirely sure what to order, sensors, vacuum lines, egr parts and accessory drives are all gone.
They have nothing to base reassembly off of.
We have the engine I purchased from 22reperformance on the stand waiting.
The same shop who removed the engine also ran it into a wall ruined the grille, headlight doors, turn signals, Factory bumper and valence.
The wishlist for NOS parts would be
grille, headlight doors, turn signals, running lights, front bumper & lower valence, rear bumper,
I know I need every vacuum line, sensor, the accessory mounts for the a/c compressor, power steering pump, alternator, I’m sure there’s more I’m missing. It has cruise control as well just not sure what all I need.
Hard top glass and windows is needed also.
I appreciate any and all help.

We’ve not started on the interior yet and don’t want to overwhelm anyone willing to assist.
Interior is in decent shape but if anyone has a lead on or for sale 85 gray SR5 interior trim pieces. Carpet, the second row panels on each side, headliner material or trim.
The goal is to make it perfect

If you want to put factory style stripes on it: james dean creations, http://www.jamesdeancreations.com/1984-86.htm
For the AC and PS brackets, might just have to hit eBay, or post up a wanted thread here on YT in classifieds, somebody probably has them sitting around.
Grille and headlight surrounds, I really don't know if there are any NOS, there are certainly aftermarket ones on eBay.
You obviously already know about 22reperformance, but his site has a lot of underhood parts, the temp sensors, TPS, etc. He also sells vac line.

I have a repro grille, headlight doors and parking lights on mine. They DO NOT fit as well as originals. I doubt you will even find “NOS” parts but try for OEM parts at least.
