Picked up the seats yesterday. My upholstery guy said that the cordura was extremely hard to work with. Since the fabric is so rigid it was difficult for him to get the fabric as tight as he likes.

Regardless the seats look great to me! If the grey rear seat pulls bother you. I'm sorry just going to be that way for now.

I still have a lot to finish, not even including future plans. But its nice to have it driveable. It is no longer a big paper weight.

I agree, the seats look great! How much did it cost you?

The upholstery cost me under $300 including the cost of fabric. And I have enough to redo my interior panels and door panels leftover.

The fact that I purchased 3 different rear seats before I found what I wanted added a little to that.

jrpsaros actually found me the sr5 rear seats that I wanted when he was in Arkansas. I think I counted 5 different rear seat types that were in these vehicles while I was searching.

Wow, that's a lot less than I was expecting. I've only seen one type of factory seat for these trucks. They may have many types of upholstery colors but they all use the same frame and pads. I think the variations are all aftermarket options sold by various places.

Thanks! It helps to have a retired family friend that used to make a living doing upholstery.

Did they have many aftermarket seats for these?

Mine being an 85 had the "port added" rear seat when i purchased it. This was a full bench that did not latch. The rear of the seat just flopped forward and back unless tied back to the brackets where the seat back latches normally are. I wasn't happy with that so I started the search for a split bench.

I have a split bench out of an 87 sr5 that uses a different mounting method to the floor. The seat back uses a piece of rod that runs through square tubing to rotate forward. The rod uses an eye in the floor mounts to attach and act as a hinge. The seat did use the same pad but a different interior frame, the seat back is also plywood in these. I wasn't a big fan of the frame design as the tabs bent easy and allowed the seat to come unhinged/unhooked from the floor. I also saw this model seat in another 86 that I passed on.

There was one more variation that I noticed from an 86 as well. The seat had the square internal frame and plywood backing but used the bolt on hinges/mounting brackets (did not use the rod through the seat).

The one in my 4runner now came out of an 87 that has the metal frame and seat back. The mounting brackets actually bolt to the rear of the seat.

I am not sure if these were altered seats or not but seeing these differences in different models make me believe that they were factory. The pads were all similar but the interior frame and mounting style is where I noticed differences. It would be interesting to see how many different variations of the rear seat there were.

Why don't they fit? I wonder if they'd fit my Cragar wheels.

They have about 1/8" thick tabs that hold behind the wheel. Since my wheels fit flush with the rear brake drum I don't really want to try them.

On the wheels these came with the wheel centers are actually contoured out a little to allow room for the tabs to fit behind the wheel and still allow the wheel to be flush with the brake drum.

Love your build, just read it all! What did you use to paint the calipers and hubs? Also what suspension setup do you have?

There's plenty of threads with similar stories. Try searching in the 86-95 Truck/SUV Tech section. Start your own thread if you can't find the information you're looking for. Don't just ask your question at the end of a totally unrelated thread in the wrong section. Welcome to Yotatech.

I used my leftover engine enamel for the calipers. For the hubs I used Rustoleum semi-gloss. That has been my go to black paint for this build.

Well I was hoping to avoid it but I need gears. Currently 4th gear is useless until I hit 60.

Guess that puts a hiccup on my Truetrac that I installed in an extra 4.10 diff.

Fast forward a couple months... I have been driving this around town and have been very happy with it.

I did recently have the extra diff setup at East Coast Gear supply with my Tru-trac and Motive 4.88's. When swapping out the diffs I did notice a leak in my rear axle housing where the brake line keeper is spot welded. That is going to speed up my IFS rear swap.

Also still have to address the following:
rear interior panels
Front axle gearing
A/C install
Finish my rear bumper build. (currently fabbing in my flush reverse lights)
Fix L trim on my top before winter.

Rear Bumper Build

At this point I redesigned how the bumper body connected to the bumper brackets. With how I wanted to fab the side protection it would be impossible to remove the bumper. So I cut off the bumper brackets and made the assembly bolt on.

From here I installed the clevis mounts which go all the way through the 2"x4" and tie into the brackets that bolt to the bumper mounts to the frame. Also cut out recesses for the flush mounted LEDs. Painted with Rustoleum spray can truck bed liner.

And COMPLETE!
The lights will be wired to a 3 position switch OFF-Always on-On with reverse lights. Picture pulled from interwebs for reference.
