Boy this adventure has been an interesting one. Have numerous hoses that need to be replaced. Alternator went out. Strongly considering the gm 1 wire alternator swap.
Front wheel bearing need to be re packed.
I have a gnarly noise coming from the u joints I think. Only in reverse and its a strong crackle. Gonna replace all three of the rear u joints.
Still have an oil leak I can't track down. Lol
And I need to re do and re follow my vacuum lines and make sure all is well. It still won't idle high on cold starts. So lots to do still before the fun stuff.

I've learned a big lesson with this rig. Do it the right way the first time or don't do it at all lol. And it'll save LOTS of time and money doing it right the first time.

It is best to change all the hoses at once. They get spongy and then when you tug on them it is only a matter of time before one will spring a leak. It takes a while to get everything back up to speed. Start with one system and work your way thru it and on to the next. Brake System, Clutch Sytem, hoses, belts...

she really needs a tune up. i put some cheapo spark plug wires in there and i dont think it likes them. i get a sort of cutting out/miss around 3500 rpm uphill
also found i have a stripped head bolt =[
always a work in progress lol. i really want to do lift, hi steer, and some 33s or 35s but theres always something that comes up and takes my money lol the joy of owning a 30 yr old truck.

I get my rotor cap from the dealer. Same price as the part store top shelf brand. The wires I get are Denso off of ebay and seems like they are about $27 and that is with shipping.
The problem I have seen with part store wires is they keep backing off of the cap. They just wont stay seated on there.
Seeing your truck out on the trails really making me want to get mine out on the road. Front rotors are out of round and it is just too cool and rainey this week that I really dont want out in the shop this week.

She died today. Acting up all weekend on cold starts not wanting to idle and it was missing. On the way home from camping and it overheated, gf was driving it and didn't notice the temp gauge. It just keeps over heating and the cooling system is insanely pressurized. Probable cause : head gasket. Block test as well as Tear down to begin this week. Yay for doing it all over again.

Tore it down. The stripped head bolt caused the head gasket to go. Had a broken timing chain guide. And apparently I happened to strip a spark plug hole. The head is warped. The block is bad because of the stripped head bolt hole. I'd have to time sert it. (Didn't know those were so expensive) lol. So I've just decided to order a reman motor from lkq through work. Along with new belts, hoses, spark plugs, wires, and distributor cap and rotor. All oem Toyota parts. Gonna cost a bunch BUT I think it's the best route for now since I apparently am not the mechanic I thought I was with rebuilding the motor lol. Hopefully the new motor will be in next week!

I have bought motors and rebuilt motors. I dont know what lkq charges, but rebuilding one can be nearly as expensive as buying one. I prefer to buy one myself. You will have some kind of warranty when you buy it, when you build it, you are the warranty. I think you went the better route. The time involved in waiting for parts, machine work and assembly, I consider a month in order to build one.

Got the estimate today....my work orders motors through jap inc ...$2200 ouch. Looks like I will be doing a head job, having the machine shop do an insert in the block , and then slap it all together with an oem head gasket, and clean manifolds haha.

a little update on the truck. i got a used motor with unknown mileage from a guy on a local crawler page in my area. runs good but dude used some bolts in place of the studs for the exhaust manifold. pulled them out to swap my manifold in and three of them pulled the threads =[ , luckily i have everything available to time-sert the head at work. i ordered all new oem studs and nuts and hopefully will have this exhaust leak fixed soon. just tuned her up with dense wires, plugs and cap and rotor. have to recheck timing and adjust the valves. also having the overshoot problem, gonna put a new thermostat in it tomorrow and re bleed the cooling system and see what happens. ill have some pictures up tomorrow!
