Ol' Yella Build - Aussie First Gen Dual Cab 83

Hi all, I'm new to Yota Tech and decided I would create a build thread of my LN46 1983 Dual Cab Hilux (Ol' Yella). I am a 21-year-old Australian living in Queensland. These first gen Hiluxes are quite rare here in Australia although they don't seem to get as much hype as they do in the states. I mostly see first gen Hiluxes used as bash around or farm trucks (to be honest I had a first gen Hilux before Ol' Yella and used it purely as a bash around truck ).
I have had the truck for almost a year now, haven't done too many significant mods although I have a long list of mods on the horizon. I'll keep this post short. Below is a list of the mods the truck has, and another list of the mods I want to do to it. I'll also try and post as many photos as I can.

Mods/Extras Done
  • 3 Inch Suspension Lift (I think)
  • 33 Inch Hankook Dynapro Mud tyres
  • Fully sick paint job
  • Central remote locking
  • Basic sound system
  • Front LED bar and LED Reverse Lights
  • Reversing Camera
  • Drawer system
  • Tub mounted 12V power sockets
  • Canopy
  • Under tub water tank and in tub water tank with pump
  • Dual Battery setup
  • Campsite lighting (lights coming off the sides)
  • Custom center console with cup holders
  • Exeedy Sports Tuff HD Clutch
Mods to do
  • Either a 2.8 L or 3.0 L engine swap (preferably with a turbo)
  • 5 Speed gearbox
  • Power steering
  • Air con
  • Sub woofer
  • New paint job
  • Plenty more that I can't think of right now.

Would love to have me a dual cab rig. You have a great looking rig, even though it is Yellow, LOL

I see you live in "The Sunshine State." Florida license plates say the same thing. I'm sure you know those were never sold in the U.S. so they are very rare here. It looks like you have plenty of fun with it!

Hahah the paint job wasn't my doing. Although it certainly makes it easier for friends to spot you on the beach/track

I actually didn't know that! I studied in California for half a year and saw so many of these (compared to Australia) driving around (mostly single cab) in such good condition.
I building it up as a touring truck, with the ability to remove all the gear and still use it as a regular pickup.

Very nice! These trucks are one of the perks of Oz! My father-in-law lives in Mermaid Beach and he used to have a really nice double cab first gen that he sold right before I met my wife 10 years ago.

They're fantastic. I love the dual cab, mind you, they are a crap load heavier than the single cabs.
So I'm guessing only single cabs are sold in the states?

Bought a canopy from the wreckers for $150 AUD yesterday although I almost immediately regretted it as it was a few inches too short, however, my impatience got the better of me (I really wanted a canopy). I forgot to take a photo of it on the Luxxy so will take one after I have painted it. I re-fibreglassed the based of the canopy and am going to paint it yellow this weekend. I figured the only two colours that would suit are Yellow or Black, and here in Queensland black is the stupidest colour to have. My fridge would have to be constantly running at full power just to keep temp, so yellow it is.

I also modified my draw system to accommodate for my fridge with the canopy on. And I also mounted a small home-made water tank under the tub. All I could manage to fit under there was about 10Liters of piping unless I spent an arm and a leg to make some complex setup. I am yet to plumb in hoses for filling and draining it, and clean it all up.

Anyway, pictures.

So I finally got the canopy painted and fitted. Spent over the cost of the canopy just in paint as I got the wrong yellow and had to buy different paint. Anyway, here is the result. The gap at the front of the canopy is rather unfortunate however I am able to fit both of my recovering tracks in there so there's a silver lining

Been a while since I've updated, however i've still been chipping away at the mods-to-do list.
Since I last posted I have done the following:
  • Wired reverse lights to back of canopy
  • Installed a tub-mounted dual battery, with a voltage sensitive isolator in the engine bay.
  • Installed a 60 liter water tank in the tub behind the drawers
  • Installed a new Exeedy Sports Tuff HD clutch.
  • Dynamatted the front doors
  • Made a custom center console with cup holders and USB in it too (forgot to take a pic of the final product)
Here's some photos.

Finally Turboed the LN46

I managed to Turbo the hilux a year or so back now, it's been fantastic!
I did a How-To write-up on it if anyone is interested. All the parts and prices are Australian, so keep that in mind if you're doing it.
