79_hilux_limited's 1979 pickup hilux build thread
So about a month ago, I picked up a 22r/5spd swapped Hilux for $700. It was so cheap because it wouldn't start at the previous owners house. I towed it home, gave it a shot of ether and it has been running ever since.
This is what it looked like when i got it:
I then realized it was badged as a limited edition, so i did some research on that and found out it was #1064 of 1089.
In the month that i have had it, Ive rattlecanned it(for now), put a ~4" lift on it with 33's. This was done by making a hybrid leaf pack for the front and shackling the rear(want to do a different setup down the road). I have also redone the interior, and given the engine a tuneup.
Next items on my list is to install the hedman header and exhaust system that I picked up off of Craigslist, fix electrical issues, make new extended front shock mounts, new shocks, flip the u-bolts, 5.29 gears, front winch bumper, new rear bumper, do some body work/rust repair. That is all i can think of right now, but I will update this periodically as I make progress on the truck.

So I got the header and exhaust system installed yesterday, also did plugs, wires, cap, rotor and adjusted the carb. It made a very noticeable difference, not huge, but definitely noticeable. I was able to climb hills on 287 north at 55mph in 4th gear, when before I had to drop down to third. My next move is to install some 5.29 gears (as i do still have the 4.10's) and install some 35" KMII's.
I also picked up front shackles off Craigslist for $10. I am unsure of the brand, but they seem pretty beefy, being made out of 1/4" steel. They should give me roughly 2" of lift in the front, hopefully getting rid of the little bit of rake I have towards the front. Those will hopefully go in tonight.
I also hit up a couple junkyards and found 1 first gen pickup. I was able to get a passenger side fender, two almost perfect door panels, a decent vinyl floor cover, and some various small parts.
Ill post pics tonight.

I also am using an OEM style muffler for now (extremely restrictive) Hopefully i will have a flowmaster on there soon... I can imagine that would help the high end, being that it will flow more freely at higher rpms.
And yes. The shackles are roughly 4" longer than stock.

I rearended a dodge 3500 pickup on my roadtrip. Here is the aftermath
This happened monday night. I am going to fix the truck. It needs a whole new cab, as mine is tweaked really bad. Luckily the frame isnt bent and the only damage besides the body was the radiator and fan. I am hitting up the junkyards this weekend to try and find a decent cab. I wanted to eventually do a cab off restoration on this truck, but now its happening sooner than i thought...

I made some progress on finding parts for my truck this weekend. I found a 1980 cab. The only damage is rust in the floorboards.
I also went online and purchased parts. My goal is to have this new cab repaired and put on by the end of February. I am looking at storage units tomorrow as it is too cold to work on it in outside. This cab comes with a complete interior and one fender.
Also, it has a factory CB without a mic. Anybody have any ideas on where to get a new mic for it??

Damn that sucks but that cab looks pretty good. If you only upgrade the master it will not really improve braking that much, the pedal will be a lot stiffer too. Maybe this can help if you haven't seen it or need ideas:

So tonight, after renting a storage unit to get out of the subzero cold, I made a ton of progress on the truck. The interior is completely stripped except for the heater box, all the body mounts disconnected and the wiring harness pulled to do repairs and clean it up. I am hoping to have the cab completely stripped and off the frame tomorrow night. Then i can tow the frame to the car wash to pressure wash it and prep it for paint so i am ready for the new cab that I am picking up this weekend.

I got the cab off tonight. It wasn't very hard at all. At the rate I'm going, I am hoping to have it done by the 25th.
The salvage yard is pulling the new cab off this week and I am picking it up this weekend. In the accident it tweaked my driver front body mount bracket on the frame, but that is all the damage to the frame.
I am redoing the wiring harness as well. The previous owner used electrical nuts to connect some cut wires so I am going through and soldering all the broken wires. I am also incorporating the wiring for my auxiliary lights on the bumper and roll bar into the factory harness.
The 2 12" electric fans that I ordered came in today. I am going to set them up in a staggered push/pull setup as they are too wide to fit both on one side of the radiator.
I also extended all three brakelines by adding a stock rear brakeline to each one, doubling the length. This only cost me $25
I am debating if I want to do a hockey puck lift when I put the cab back on or not.
I am still trying to find a decent grill and drivers side fender. Those are the only parts I haven't been able to find yet. Hopefully ill find them this weekend...

Just an FYI, doing a body lift on these trucks isn't as easy as it seems. Here are some things that you need to consider:
-Radiator raises with the body so it will have to be lowered. Since you are doing an e-fan then you won't have to worry about the fan shroud lining up with the fan, but you may have some complications with radiator hose connections.
-The front bumper is connected to the frame so it will need to be raised too.
-Your steering shaft may need to be extended depending on how much you lift the body.
-Check all your cables, hoses and electronics to make sure they don't need to be extended too.
To be honest, these trucks really don't need a body lift unless you are trying the run ridiculously huge tires in which case you're in for a lot more work with regearing and power upgrades/engine swap. Since all of the body sits above the frame and body lift isn't needed for ground clearance like some other makes. Just giving you a heads up before you spend unneeded money and time.

I am considering doing roughly a 1" body lift.
The only hose/cable I can see needing to be extended is the hose going to the slave cylinder. I am not to worried about the radiator hoses as I have a second gen 22re radiator and I have to figure out different hoses already.
As for the front bumper, I am not using the stock one. I am going to make my own tube style bumper after I put the cab back on and the rear bumper is non-existant.
I am still debating on the lift...
Tonight I am going to try and repair the drivers front cab mount, put the new front shackles on, and start sanding the bed. I am hoping to find a trailer I can borrow so I can tow the frame/bed to the local car wash to remove the caked on grease and mud.
