difference between trail and limited, can't decide

I am not sure where to ask this question. I decided on a new 4 Runner due to age and head gasket issue with my 80 series Land Cruiser. Is there a lot of difference between the Trail and the Limited besides the nav. system and the leather seats? Will the Limited do what the trail can do out of the box? I am not looking for the hardcore trail rig, but do need to get to some hard to get to places with some boulders and ditches. Please help. I am really out of the loop on the latest electronic off road technologies like that press the button and drive itself deal I see on Utube. Beside the money difference, which would you get. I stopped by the dealer, they did not have a Trail for me to see, but there were plenty of Limited trucks. I am just not digging the 20" wheel and tires. So low profiled? Thanks

Jeff

Not sure how many 5th gen guys you'll find around here, I'd check out T4R.org if I were you, lots of 5th gen guys there. A simple answer would be no, the Limited won't go everywhere the trail will, not without damage anyway. Aside from the luxury goodies compared to off road goodies the Limited has the full time 4wd capability w/ the Torsen center diff, like all 4wd 4th gens, the trail and SR5 are true part time 4wd systems, but the trail gets the coveted rear locker.

Great, thanks. Locking diff is all I needed to know just like my land Cruiser. Trail is it, done.

When I started looking at 4runners, I found T4Rorg. After a couple of post asking dumb questions, one guy told me to do the research myself and would not help. Then I found this. they can keep all the info to themselves as far as I am concern. Its really too bad isn't it.

Thank you so much again for the info. You just helped me with a big decision.

I am sure the newer 4runners are more capable then my little 85 SR5 truck. I do still wish they were solid axle up front.

I had a similar experience with t4r.org when I first had questions about my (2nd gen) 4runner. Don't think anybody even replied to my threads. Many people don't like the way some of the electronic controls work when offroad, but learn how they work and you can either use them or disable them as you see fit. A coworker of mine didn't like the idea of having to disable traction control to make it easier to drive a new tundra up a slick snowy street. It did have street tires and no weight in the bed though. It will drive differently than your land cruiser without a doubt. I just wish they made new 4runners with a manual tranny.

Limited has chrome, and a different front bumper. Trail has no chrome, different bumpers, and a few other options.

I learn to love my auto tranny in my LC. I too was skeptical at first coming from my little Toyota trucks.

Thanks mak92. Looks and color are not important to me. It just has to get me to and from places.

I decided on a Trail Edition after reading tons of material over at toyota120.com (where all the newer guys seem to go). In the end I optioned the truck out with KDSS and Navigation. The KDSS seemed like a necessary option with all of the on road and off road driving I plan to do.

Good luck finding a proper Trail, I searched high and low and finally found mine on ebay at a dealership in Pittsburgh.

I haven't seen my new Trail yet, but can't wait to compare it against my old V8 Sport Edition.

Let me know how much you like the new Trail please. I will check Tjoyota 120, thanks. What are you doing with your V8? I am surprise you have to settle for a V6. I am with you on the on and off road. I am in the same situation. Over the years, I have done enough off roading in my little truck and land Cruisers to last a life time. No more. My need for a locker is to get up a steep hill side during winter up in our little cabin. Nothing more.

Yeah absolutely...though you might not like my timeline. I'm currently over in Afghanistan. I bought the truck 2 weeks ago and it's sitting at the dealership waiting for me to get back in mid-may.

Interesting Side Note: My father has a 2011 Limited. I'll be driving out to Colorado in mine, and then hopping in his to drive up to Idaho. I'll definitely have time to compare the two if you're willing to wait until June.

I am in no hurry. I must purchase the vehicle by the end of the next fiscal year. My Land Cruiser broke in the prefect time.

Are you a solder keeping the bad guys away from us? If so, I want to thank you for doing that for our families and friends.
