chrismcdowell25's 1986 4Runner Build-Up Thread

I bought the truck from the second owner with 126,000 miles on it in Jan, 2010 for $1850. It had some sag in the back but ran strong.

I switched the engine to Mobile1 cause it makes me feel good.

This is how I got it.

$1,850 Steal.














The front windshield trim was catching dirt and started to rust through. So I pulled it off and repaired the holes a bit to keep it from getting worse. I still need to redo the patches just did a quick fix to keep the rain out.

I installed OME leafs, bushings and shocks in the back. Gave me 2 inches lift over stock. I also pulled off the roof racks and the brush guards over the lights. I left the bull bar portion though I plan to remove it down the road.

Just had some BFGoodrich MT KM2's installed. 32x11.5x15 I noticed some loss in power while on the freeway and going up steeper hills but so far nothing too drastic. I have a big hill on my commute that always slows me down to about 60mph in fourth gear on my old 27 inch tires so I'll have to see how it fairs with the 32's. I may have a regear next on my list but so far it's working.

everybody seems to go for the KM2's now. bet you cant wait to get them dirty.

I had the KM2s on my yota, and they are one of the best tires I have had. really good street manners, and proven on the Rubicon trail... you will love those tires...

So far I love them and I haven't even hit any mud with them yet. Hoping that changes soon though and they cover the truck with mud. They are a very quiet tire for how aggressive the tread on them is.

U will absolutely love the km2s. only reason i wnt be running them is i plan on mving to a 37 or 38 and sadly they only come in a 17inch wheel size then and i love rollin on 15s lol

Is your commute over the Sunol grade? I drive south on it for work down 680...used to have to throw it into 3rd sometimes to get up and over with my 32" BFGs.

With my LCE header and exhaust, I gained a gear or two - amazing difference and a great upgrade!

Yep Sunol grade is the one and I also have to throw it into third. I was thinking of regearing. Did you gain any MPG's back with the header and exhaust? Maybe I'll look into both. I hate doing exhausts. Seems the bolts are always seized and I have had to do them on almost every car I have had in the past few years. Ha

Only think I am not a fan of is my loss in fuel economy. I am taking it into the hills next week and am hoping for mud. I am sure my complaints will be much smaller once they are slinging mud and not wearing down asphalt.

37 inches of rubber on a 15 is quite a bit. I was amazed at the 32's. Kinda amazing they don't blow the bead.

While I still have my stock cat, the LCE header and exahaust not only made a difference in power/throttle response, but my mileage went from about 16 MPG to around 20 MPG - on 32" tires. I thought it was a relatively significant increase

Hit up this trail with some other yotatech guys. KM2's handled it all well.

I ordered front torsion bars, shocks and front and rear ring and pinion gears in 4.88. Ring and pinion should be here soon but ARB has a back order on the OME torsion bars.

I also did a cigarette lighter socket install over the weekend. I made the little plate out of a piece of steel and installed it where the cigarette tray used to go in the rear console. Works out well so far.

Nice work on the mod - where did you order the part(s) and what did it cost? I did a search online a few months back for the same thing (also looking for power inverter kit I could install).

Keep us posted on the gear install - I'm really curious to see how this goes and how hard it is, since I run large tires and am running stock gears.

I just had a piece of sheet metal and a cigarette lighter and did some banging in the shed. I might be able to rig up another one if your really that interested in it. I don't have any more cigarette lighters though and found the one I have in the shed. Fry's didn't have anything similar.

hey 37s on 15s... man my buddy had 42s on 15s no beadlocks now thats alot of rubber lol. i have 35s on 15s and have ran them at less than 8 psi once or twice and never came close to blowin a bead. like the cig mod.
