New Member - had a 'few' toyota's in the past
So.... new member here..... joined here because I just bought a (well really 1 1/2- 1 3/4) giant project FJ40. Always wanted an FJ40 and, well, guess we'll see how far I get.
Little on the past of what I currently have / have had:
Currently:
'10 Corolla S 5 speed manual (my Wife's daily.. all of 15k miles)
'04 Lexus IS300 sport design / LSD / 5 speed manual
'86 MR2 with 91 5sfe / S54 swap
'95 Explorer (with some off road stuff, nothing overly exciting)
Past:
Countless stock MR2's (about 7 or 8)
87 T-Bar MR2 that had a custom 11.3:1 7age in it (sold with smallport 4age)
87 Hardtop MR2 that had a JDM supercharged ae101 4agze & ae92 C52... first 4agze retaining the supercharger to run on Megasquirt (built that in like 2004). This was mainly a stripped out auto-x car
86 parts MR2 purchased for the JDM map harness/ecu it had
1990 Corolla SR5 - which had countless 4age swaps in it, on a modified 4afe ecu (modified to redline at 7800).. meaning this was a map based 4age in the US
86 4 Runner AT that was relatively stock
Non Toyota's in the past:
1990 Geo Prizm GSI (basically a '90 corolla GTS in a geo body)
86 Ford F150... that was a pile.
Now it's time to dive, fully in, to FJ40's.
We picked up 2 this weekend. One that was on an island and has pretty typical / bad rust. The bottom of the rear top has rust that I plan to fix. Roof itself is rust free. All of the hard doors have some rust in the bottom but otherwise pretty clean. This one came with the rare stock front toolbox, a set of matching cloth front & rear FJ seats (bench in the front, long in the back), a pair of stock buckets in bad shape, and a few other pieces. Body is pretty much all there but the tub is rusting out pretty bad.
The 2nd.... might be a gem or might become something ridiculous. Looks like it hasn't run in 15 years, the plate it came with was last registered in CA 1983. It has a SBC swapped in with an unknown AT trans. The SBC has:
Camel Hump heads
Offenhauser intake manifold
Holley carb
some odd aftermarket headers
Mickey Thompson valve covers with most of the T-handle bolts
A lot of parts that used to be chrome
Mallory coil.
The rig also has a PS / 'saginaw' steering swap. Came with some mild rust in the corners and surface rust all over the frame & axles. Pulled the VC and they look great, pulled the plugs and didn't look horrid, plan is to swap the oil then use a tool I made for the 4.3 in our boat to run prime the oil pump / system. After that I will ensure all wiring is disconnected except the starter & crank it over w/o plugs, see how it sounds/looks. If all goes well, throw some fuel in and send some power to the ballast on the coil. If it fires, then I'll run a line directly to a gas can.
The window/frame, top, front doors, rear ambulance doors from the '76 will be put onto mine. Mine is a late build '69.. friend has a '68 and wants the window/frame as a spare (and I'd rather have the later wipers). Pull the disc axle & swap it as well. Seats from the '76 purchase are already sitting at home.
Hoping the motor is OK... if not I have other options & the swap is already done. After that I will pull the gas tank to have it checked / repaired if needed. Will start rewiring the entire truck - I'm planning on starting with literally nothing and building up the wiring, should be straight forward (and can't imagine paying the cost of the painless harness).
Will try to get some pics up soon!

Here's the '70 with the SBC:
The '76:
(looks better in the photos than it actually is..... the '70 actually has far less rust)
The IS:
The exploder:
The 86 MR2 engine bay post swap (all mounts were custom built to bolt to the stock locaton... typically S series swaps hack up the car to fit S mounts to the car... made no sense to me... I can unbolt the 5sfe/s54 and bolt in a 4age/C52 without any issues):
(needs to be painted, little old photo)
Not gonna go through all the other car photos, LOL.
Forgot... had an ae86 SR5 for a while as well.... (I'm sure there's others I'm forgetting...)
