Mismatched Spare Tire

So I've got an interesting situation. My 91 P/U has stock-sized tires (can't remember the sizes atm) that I've had on there since I bought the truck. Recently, I went to fill the air in my tires and thought it would be a good idea to fill the spare as well. I took it off and realized it's a 31, about 2-3 inches taller then my tires on the vehicle.

My question is, in an emergency situation, am I ok putting the 31 on my truck for <50 miles? Or will that do terrible things to the gears and axle?

with open diffs and keeping it in 2wd, you should be ok. i wouldn't do it for extended distances though.

if you plan on keeping the same size tires for a while, you can most likely go to a small tire shop and either trade them out or pay a very small amount for the proper size spare. might even find someone on CL who will trade you when they are going UP in size.

That's a good idea, didn't think about that. I might try and trade then. I'm just over I-80 in Roseville, need a 31 for a spare?

oh, right on man. sorry, i've got a spare that's too small as-is! running 33s, but spare's a 31 - because i still need an spare aftermarket wheel that will accept a 33x12.5 tire and not rub steering parts.

since you live so close, i'd suggest you call up the tire place on Greenback/Auburn since their sign and CL ads say they have used tires - which would be great for a spare. i'd assume price depends on how much tread is left and what type of tire it was. pretty much any of the small tire shops in the area should be able to help you - Greenback Tires, S&S on Sylvan, etc.

most 4wd toyotas are all all 6-lug unless you've got a newer toyota 4wd (cruiser, tundra, sequoia) or a 2wd.

I'll take a look at what I've got on there again and the spare. I'll check pressure on the spare since I filled it a few weeks back, don't want to trade a tire that is no good!
