LS1 into 2nd gen 4Runner ayone?
#181
I plan on starting my project this fall. I plan on using the 5.3 with a 4L80 trans, then adapting it to the toy transfer. I want to try and leave the front IFS intact. I do already have a 3" body lift in it right now. I'm thinking about using a set of 4.88 from a v6 that i have in the garage. Any comments are encouraged. I work at a salvage yard, so I have very good access to parts and on the cheap!

Biggest issue with the V8 and IFS Is the oil pan and differential clearance. You may have to modify the oil pan or raise the engine up really high. Thats why most people swap to SA with a V8 swap.

I know i am joining late but has anyone heard of swapping a 5.7L chevy into a 95 4runner 2wd. I plan on doing a SAS at the same time. I have a doner gmc suburban that the wife wants to get rid of next year and if it will fit and work, it will be perfect for my sons $3000.00 95 3.0 yota that we just picked up. Any Ideas?

The LS2 TBSS's have a modified oil pan that might work if you want to keep the IFS...
This is a project I've been kicking around for my 1st Gen 4Runner, since I already have a ~450whp motor in my TA I'm going to pull out of it for a 6L block Procharger build I want to do in 2010
I've also thought about just finding a stock higher-mileage 5.3L to drop in there, too.
If I do it I'm going to modify a 6cyl 5-speed for the lower OD as posted elsewhere in here.
Hope that helps a bit!

I have never seen anyone use 400+ HP rockcrawling before. I gotta see this. Make sure you videotape the event and post it here. before you do, wrap the transmission tunnel with kevlar.

Generation III chevy small blocks 4.8/5.3/5.7 did away completely with the distributor and instead use coil packs.
The LT1 and LT4 were the last of the generation II small blocks that used distributors. The LT1/4 both used the inferior optispark which was idiotically placed below the water pump so you can guess what happens when the water pump gaskets start to leak...

Blazerboy - got some questions for ya!
How has the 700r4 tranny been treating ya? Also would it (the tranny) have fit without the body lift? I cant count the threads Im reading online stating that the 4L80e was far easier to fit than the 4L60e/700r4 courtesy of the bell housing not being as wide...
How close is the tranny to the transmission tunnel at the closest point?
Im planning on doing a 4.8L vortec with beefed up valve springs and arp rod bolts and a 01-03 LS6 cam, LS6 intake, so as to spin up to 7k rpm and reduce a little bit of tq on the bottom end of the rpm curve (should help driveline longevity.) Since I will be turbo'ing the 4.8 Im planning on going for about 450-550 hp at the rear wheels so I need a tranny that will hold that AND deal with a 4800lb suv that will occasionally hook at the track. I've read too many horror stories about the 700r4 puking its guts out in 3200lb Fbodies to think that it'll work for my goals, but I wanted your thoughts too.
Also what did you do about the A/C? Im sure that I can get the toyota wiring to engage the a/c clutch, but how does one go about attaching the toyota lines to the GM compressor?
Did you use the stock fuel lines? Did you keep the return system? Did you keep the OEM pump in the tank?
Any ideas on how much power will our OEM rear end hold without any drag strip launches?
