I bought a 87 4runner with 4.3vortec TH350 swap already done...

Ok as stated above I have a 87 4runner with a 4.3 vortec and TH350 transmission PO did a hack job on the wiring the engine runs smooth untill it warms up an then wants to stall out at idle? And I can't figure out how to hook up reverse lights? The runner was originally a manual... Should I buy a new harness and re wire it all myself? How hard would that be? any help is much appreciated

it really depends on how mechnically inclined you are, if the 4.3 wants to stall out when warm it sounds like an engine problem to me, not a wiring issue

Im pretty mechanically inclined but I have never delt with anything that wasn't carbureted any ideas on what it might be?

sounds to be like basic tune up parts, if its fuel injected then i couldnt tell ya im just guessing stuff

Can't really help with that amount of information. The 4.3 was in production for almost 25 years, in dozens of models. 5 or 6 different fuel systems.

Ditto with the trans....

Does it have a tbi injection "looks like a carburetor" Or a really tall intake with tubes and and a plastic cover that says vortec? That would be a cpi 4.3 . You need to post pictures.

You have "gm CPI motor " made from 1992 to 95 . Allmost 200 hp stock .
Good motor but " spider injector " the fuel injector is prone to leaking when they get old . Easy to replace if bad , cost about $175 .
Same motor I have in my 92 4runner.

I would do a basic tune up first then check for a vacum leak , then leaky injector.

Ok a couple more things does there need to be a wire coming out of the coil (away from the distributed)? and I believe it's the crankshaft sensor but the wire don't connect to anything... Do they need to be? And where?

^^^ the wires come from a connector right bellow the crankshaft pulley.

Where your spark plug wires conect to the distributor cap point up or to the side?
Is your computer a sliver box or black box ?
In 1995 some of the CPI motors were "obd 1 smog " Silver computer ,spark plug wires pointing up and no crank shaft sensor or "obd 2" smog ,black computer , spark plug wires pointing sideways and a crank shaft sensor .
Yours could be mixed , let know what you find .

If you are set up to run a crankshaft position sensor and it is not hooked up, the truck would not run. It sounds like the truck runs fine when in open loop but when it warms up and goes into closed loop the truck stalls. First thing I would do is pull some codes, it should point you in the right direction as long as the PO put in a way to read the blink codes or you have a scanner capable of running GM OBD 1.

Ok good . You have obd1. You don't need that crank sensor thats obd2 stuff . Your motor might have Been obd2 at one time like mine then I made it obd1 because it a little simpler .more after market support

I would call yours a 1994 thats what i call mine. In later 1995 they started going to obd2 smog so when you are getting part's it's confusing for the parts guy.
I think the wire from the coil goes to a tach.
Don't unscrew the crank sensor or oil will come out.
You should have wire connector some where for a smog ref to hook to. It's black and about 10 wires go to it. Thats where you cross a wire to check engine light flash for diagnostic. Do you have a check engine light for your motor?
After tune up check your timing . There should be a inline connector " 1 wire i think the wire is white and the connector is black" u unhook before checking timing, it should be by the computer.
Get a spare "ignition control module" it goes in the distributor and their kinda of a common problem on gm's " I went through 2 of these " And might be your problem. It control's the timing.
