4.3 Swap questions
Alright been searching for 2 days, have read about 15+ threads and not much info on the few questions I have, or the answer was very vague.
The 4.3 SFI is a '96 s10 manual vin code X, will be going into '90 PU ifs with the yota tranny (r150). I know I will need either a custom oil pan, or a diff drop or body lift. most likely going to go with a low profile oil pan.
I will be using the AA bell housing kit.
1) will I be able to maintain the stock clutch/fly wheel from the 4.3?
2) If not, what clutch/fly wheel will be needed?
3) I think there is a vss in the '96, if so what has been done to over come this?
4) who is still making harnesses for this swap?
More questions might come later because I am having a brain blank out.
Thank you
RJ

from what I have found it sounds like I wouldn't have to worry because the toyota's is in the tranny so I should be ok with that part. I would presume.

Howell engine development is where I got mine $350 without computer $500 with computer. I have a stock flywheel with AA bellhousing and clutch. I'm doing the same build. Put a 03 4.3 in my 90 extra cab 3.slow the harness is real simple and labeled for everything. The truck does need a body lift for hood to close and without a suspension lift I could see there being big problems with oil pan clearance. But I too have questions I'm about to hook power steering up and how important is the proportioner thing on passenger side frame rail? Never had one on any of my 4 bangers.

You use the flywheel and pressure plate from the 4.3 350 or even a 454 work. 11" 163 or 168 tooth I forget the count. And a custom clutch disk to fit the toyota splines. AA sells the disk.
Howell or painless for a harness. And you must use a VSS to make the engine run properly. Some say this is a hoax and some will say its a must. In order to use it however you cannot run a toyota transfer case they are not set up that way but can be converted.
heres a site that has a ton of info on the VSS aspect.

Check out Painless.com for the harness
AA for adapters and clutch stuff
Pirate4x4 has an entire section on the swap also

The power steering pomp is what powers it. I took all that out on mine, connected the brake lines together. For the power steering i used the gm lines. Cut the flared ends off the steering box end , take the flared nuts off . Put the toyota flare nuts on that go to the steering box . Buy a good brake line flare kit , it must do double flare and go from 1/8 lines to 3/8 (the cheep ones suck , dont get a cheep one) "Double flare" the pump lines just like brake lines and screw them into the box. Mine work great just like stock lines.
