I have 30+ year's as an ASE certified master tech mechanic for a living and this has been my experience. I think your road block will be adapting the engine to the trans or transfer case (or maybe you have access to a talented machinist) unless you use the whole drive-train (so why not just build a ranger)(. I don't think its a Ford against a Chevy thing it's just a practicality thing you know Bang For The Buck. my vote is for the V8 if you really want a V6 the 3.4 Toyota motor ($6-700.00) is the easiest and most economical swap even if you had a free Ford donor truck. Then again I have done unusual projects before just because. Good luck. You could do what Mazda did and put your toyota emblems on the ranger LOL

You're kidding right?

3.0 is almost as big a POS as the 4cly from that era Ford truck.

I wouldn't sh it you after all you are one of my fav turd N'all. You have to remember not everybody see's the world through your eyes and your point of view. sure if you wanted a powerhouse I would choose a V8 swap. but for an eco build there are hundreds of choices if you want to get away from the underpowered 22r. My ranger with a 3.0 had some giddie up and go I also had some 2.3 5spds too but I was more impressed with the 3.0 for economy and power as a middle of the road choice the 4.0 had more power but not as much on the fuel eco department. the 3.4 toy is a excellent choice too. I say do what you are interested in and don't let what seems to disgust a few critics have too much influence on your project. BTW my DD was a 4 cyl 5spd S10 until yesterday (I was driving up the interstate and it started blowing white smoke) I will have to hurry and finish up my currant project My eco V8 swap a 1995 hi-lux 4X4 350 chevy stock TBI injection chevy rear springs SAS with rears up front 4.10 gears 150f 5spd. My hopes are to get about twice the power of the 22RE and get what may be unrealistic fuel mileage of 18 to 20 MPG? maybe on the highway

Plus I have had mechanical failures on the 4.0 of about 3 to 1 ratio and there are as many 3.0's out there as the 4.0's tarus, sable, areostar, ranger and so on. so I have to give the 3.0 dependability rating of 5 stars. Now ford transmissions are another story tho.
