Swap was worth is for me, but most would find it underpowered for my application (Stock FJ80 in 31's).
I still have ~stock power, but I have 50% better fuel economy now. (11.9 mpg -> ~18mpg)
It couples sweetly to the R151f, and this would be an excellent combination in a 4Runner.
--------------------------------------
x2 on the intake manifold sludge... It took a lot of elbow grease and brake cleaner (well ventilated area!), to clean mine up. Don't forget to do something about that pesky EGR
(Perfect time to install an egt probe as well...it is sure comforting to have the feedback)
Also, what I've found, by talking with folks on the Merc forums that they run their Mercs at 3000 rpms all day. My truck actually purrs at this rpm... I often shift ~4000. What do you guys shift at?
I think ~2400rpm is max torque (and efficiency?); and ~4200 is max HP (~140 opened wide, w/o injector pump rebuild etc...)

Not really. The EGT probe measures the temperature of the gas going from the engine block, through the manifold, to the turbo. If you opened that up, you would have to custom build a turbo manifold, and the larger you went, the more turbo lag you would have.

I was on the diesel pump UK website recently. They are experts in upgrades for the Mercedes diesel, primarily the OM 606, but more recently the OM 617. Looks like some good stuff.
