They just did this same engine into their project Samurai on Extreme 4x4 last weekend. Sounds like a solid swap, but they rated the horsepower numbers a little lower than you did. Might possibly be a different year.

They had nothing bad to say about that engine what so ever...

They did a veggie conversion on it. With all of the restaurants around here talk of that swap always gets the wheels turning. Free gas is such a turn on...

Keep us posted on the swap.

The Suzuki guys usually put the 1.6L (same engine pretty much) in because they are very easy and cheap to get. Plus the Suzuki is much smaller then a truck so they perform good for them.

Well I got the body off tonight in the freezing cold. Next is to bolt the engine block to the trans and make some mounts.

And if anyone else wants to make an adapter plate here is the layout for it. Just don't sell any if you make them. Information should be free and if someone wants to wip one up on CNC send one to me!! The plate is 3/8 thick.

Flywheel layout. The center must be bored out as the stock toyota is 40mm or something. The flywheel bolts are a weired M10x1.00. Very fine thread. (EDIT) you must swap the 48 and 72 degrees. The offset hole is closer to the right side hole not to the left.!!!!!!!!!

hey and if you really wanna save money, you can run it on mcdonalds waste oil.... diesels were designed to run on peanut oil... it works great at about a 85% diesel 15% oil ratio. plus it smells like french fries. yummy

Around here, vehicles with that much rust are only seen in the junkyard. Is that truck even still structurally intact?

Either way, very cool swap. Keep us all updated with progress!

Ya frame is good. Body was rotten through the firewall and floor. That is what you get in canada. A new truck frame looks like crap after 2 years. Its not the best but it will do once I throw some POR15 on her.

Hey there Flash319. Where bouts in Ontario are you? I'm in Sarnia for school right now and if your around the area I would be interested in seeing the thing running. I did a similar swap but I put a Toyota TD in my 92. I'd really like to see this in person. I bought my body and frame from the states so I somewhat got out of the rust deal. Diesels in these trucks sure work well. Mines a 4 cyl as well but 3.0L. And the 30mpg is very realistic. I have gotten that with mine and its an auto tranny. Intercooler and better flowing air filter and filter housing is next on my list.

Oh and another thing I plan on running my truck on Biofuels as soon as I can figure out how to make them. I'm in an Alternative Energies program for the next 2.5 years and making bio diesel is part of the course so I will be learning how to make the good high test stuff. We are acctually making ethanol in Chem right now. Started last week. We will also be into the wind generations solar stuff and of course hydrogen and fuel cells. So by the end if anyone wants to know about bio diesel I'll be happy to help out.

Hey 82Yota. I am just south of Barrie by the lake.. I was thinking of doing the Toyota TD swap but everyone in canada or US want top buck for parts or engines. Its funny you mention Alternative Energies because I am also building a CNC machine for making wood windmill blades and building a straw bale house. I have way to many projects on the go..........

I an very interested in how to make biodiesel and alternative fuels. Please do explain the process once you can.
Maybe you should post a new thread on it.

Wow Flash very very interesting...
I may want to do this mod in the future if gas gets much more pricey...
I can get a Mercedes turbo diesel right now completely re-built for about 2800.00 but I don't have the coin lol...

One of our projects this semester is to build a wind turbine from scratch. It will be a verticle axis one just because on the simplicty and costs but we get to make everything. The 3rd year students right now are making a biodiesel processor that will make about 100L/day and it should be going by March. And they will be selling the bio diesel for around 80 cents/L so I'm going to take full advantage of that. Also it will have the proper lubricty for the pump. One of these weekends I might have to make a trip up to around Barrie and stop in and see what your doing. I know some people up there and will be visiting them sometime. And yes my motor and tranny and all was top price. $4200 shipped with everything. The total I've got into the truck so far and that includes buying the truck is about $6500. The truck was the cheap part. I'd be interested in seeing your CNC setup as well. Took mechanical engineering in Thunder Bay for two years so I'm right into machining. Sorry for the long winded posts I can just type quite fast and before I know it I've got a novel.

In Sarnia. I'm going to Lambton college. Its the only school that offers this program. There are a few colleges putting a program together like this but this is the only one any of us know about right now.

Great buildup / thread.

I watched a recent episode of Extreme 4x4 (spike tv network).
They did a similar swap in a Samurai. They ran diesel and peanut
oil. Greasecar.com sells the kits for the conversion.

Way cool... thanks for sharing.

Speaking from a position of ignorance here... I thought the engine and tranny were one unit on the FWD VWs from which these engines come, or at least an interconnected unit with a common block how are you getting around that?
