Any interest in a group buy of L engines?
I've been itching for a diesel swap in my Yota for a long time now, and recently came to the conclusion that one of the later Toyota L engines makes the most sense for me. The last L's sold in the US were in '84. In late '89, they redesigned the head, fixing the head cracking issue, made a bunch of other updates, and produced various L engines up to 2005. I want a 3L; you may want a 2LT2, 2LTE, 5L, or put a turbo on a 3L or 5L. They're supposed to be more reliable and more fuel-efficient than the 1KZ. I drove a 98 Hiace (2LTE) loaded with heavy equipment this summer in Norway, and that was a good experience that formed part of my decision to get one.
Why I want one, in a nutshell: having been updated to be as reliable as you'd expect from Toyota, they're close enough to perfect - for my needs, anyway - that the considerable time, effort, and money saved by doing an OEM plug-n-play swap makes up for their remaining deficiencies (timing belt, IDI).
What I'm finding is that there may be a lot of money to be saved if a bunch of us go in on a bulk order of engines. This is hypothetical for now; I'm just gauging interest. So who's interested?

I'd be interested depending on price obviously.. There is a company close to me that can get a 2LTII with trans for 2500 ish..Its between that, and OM617, or 5vz. All are about the same to get in, cost wise.

I plan to do a 3L swap at some point. Several vendors in Australia, Malaysia, South Africa, etc offer swaps for sale. Alibaba has a few listings although $ info is vague. Anyone know about the going price for a complete mechanical injection 3L or 5L swap?

Having called a few junkyards in Australia, and contacted some vendors on Alibaba, pricing on engines (I looked only into 3L) seems to be about 1500-2500 each, excluding shipping.

Thing is... if you contact a used parts vendor in the USA for, say, a 22RE, they'll quote you what, upwards of 1k? But go to a Picknpull and it's a third of that. I would think that a self-service yard in Thailand or something would also be a lot cheaper than the best price I found there.
My own interest in the buy has paused, due to disruptions in my workshop rental situation. It'll resume in the spring, but if there's interest I can start making inquiries for... 5 engines? 10? Who else would want in if we could get, say, 1500 shipped for a 2LT, 2LTE, or 3L (5L would be more because they're rarer)?

have any of you guys though about using a Kubota? they can be had in many variations fom 1 to 5.0 liters of displacement, direct or indirect injection 2 and 4 valve heads, mechanical or electronic injection.
Over at 4btswaps.com the kubota2.2l and 2.4l are very popular for jeeps and ranger swaps, a few build even run compound turbos. A kubota is built way more robust than a stock yota diesel and can be beat and flogged all day long. look at the crank design and youll see why.
If it were me I would use a Kubota v2405 DIT. its a 2.4 liter 4 valve head, and direct injection. the pump is easily adjustable like many kubotas its similar in funtion to a p pump as it has a seperate cam to run the injection pump plungers inline that bolts in to the block and isnt a VE style pump.timing is adjusted with shims and fuel with rack travel screws. a gov. spring mod is neccecarty to make it more road friendly to get full fueling until rev limiter. with an atmospheric turbo feeding a smaller one these little engines are making mid 30's mpg and more than enough power to blow the doors off a 2lte. not to mention it wouldnt cost as much if you can make some parts and find a decent kubota. I would swap a mechanical 1kz over a 2lte but being in the startes for a small powerful diesel kubota or a 2.3 cummins a series or b3.3 series are an easier option to source. not to mention all of the perkins diesel variations out there.

Good stuff, but the purpose of using an L is for it to be plug-n-play. A Kubota or Cummins is anything but.
The problem most cross-breed swaps on a 1st gen seem to have is clearing the oilpan. We have less longitudinal distance than most vehicles between the axle and firewall. One solution is a lift; another is axle relocation; a third is custom oilpan. An L makes the most sense for people who, like me, don't want to do any of those things.
I've used and worked on some Perkins engines and have a positive impression of them, but I'm not aware of any 4-cylinder turbo Perkins, nor of any more powerful NA ones. The 4.135 found in old Mazdas and Rangers is a lovely little mill, but IMO 65hp is not enough for even a stock 4wd Toyota.

Any updates on this? Got a line on either a 2L or 2LII (he doesn't know which) from a member here, was thinking about picking it up if shipping isn't outrageous.

I'm halfway through a complicated house move and haven't been pursuing this much. That should be done in a month or two.
A non-turbo 2L pushing your 4Runner around? Well, it'll make your Camaro seem that much faster I guess.

Yeah, i was only gonna get it if i could get it cheap, and i mean like CHEAP. I think those things only put out like 60 ish hp? That would be interesting for sure.
