95 4runner om617 swap

Hello yotaers, I'm thinking of doing a diesel swap on my 2nd gen 4runner at some point in the future. I haven't decided on anything yet but a strong contender for the powerplant would be the mercedes 3.0 liter, however I've seen a lot of issues with spacing as far as the radiator goes. I'd prefer to not do the chop shop route and keep everything mostly stock as possible. (Second option would be the VW 1.9 liter) So any tips or pointers would be appreciated. On a side note I'd like to use a JDM gauge cluster or just redo the stock american one. All the threads and videos I've seen the RPM gauge isn't even hooked up. So any suggestions on how to get that working?

Both swaps are definitely difficult and depending on what transmission you have it can be more of a pain.

The TDI is definitely a nice motor and you have a few options. You can deal with the wiring issue or use a hybrid mechanical injection pump at some expense $$$$. The TDI aftermarket is huge and has potential to make good power per cubic inch. It's also significantly shorter then the 5 cylinder. Most stock TDIs use some form of intercooler so that is somthing to be mindful of when planing your build.

The OM617 is legendary for its durability in stock form. It is also a very simple motor that is easy to maintain. However look at the hood on a MB300 compared to a 1st/2nd gen yota and you can start to see the issue. They are also not power houses and do not produce the tons of low end torque like most diesels. The 5 cylinder likes to rev with peak performance from 2600-3800 RPMs so gearing and tire size is going to be key.
