1st gen 4runner 3vze OM616 swap
Hi to all,
after trying really hard to get my 3vze running properly, it started to spit water and work on 4cyl or less when cold so i knew that the swap time came.
I know that OM617 is popular because of its power but since i really dont need so much hp, i will be satisfied with the OM616 i recently bought. Can you give me some advices what to check or change beside belts before i start to put it in. It has 240k km on it, comp is within norm, i was thinking only valve check, water pump replace and belt change.
I will be using Merc starter, ps pump an alternator i hope to keep on the stock position since i wont be using my ac compressor. I have a340h automatic transmission and i am not sure how it will work with this small diesel but i hope for the best.
Thank you in advance for any advices regarding my project. Once again, i know that 617 is better option but 616 is what i have got to work with
This is my 4runner in its working environment, i mostly use it for towing bikes and moving ramps and whatnot.
pics soon

Interesting going with the OM616, I'll be interested to see how it goes. Yeah as you say power will be low (74hp I think), but then again those old W123 chassis are just about as heavy as your 4runner currently. Another nice thing about the 616 is that you should have plenty of room in front for the stock fan and not have to move the radiator at all. All that aside, I've heard OM617 turbos going for as little as $300 at scrap yards...

little update on my swap.
first we've put om616 on the motorcycle lift, leveled it and started to prepare the adapter plate and all other things
as you can see, unlike on the om617, on om616 oil filter housing gets in the way for the adapter plate so i had to remove it, will get to it later
here is the distance plate for the flywheel
thanks to dmarsh4x4 for this tricky one haha
it will be easy to get the holes out of that one
and the last one for today with plate leveled up with the tranny, ive also made some punchmark tools and got the holes marked for tomorrows drilling etc.
i really get a lot of help from this forum and also from my friend teo4runner who recently finished his om617 swap in 2nd gen 4runner, thank you guys.

finished mounting OM616 radiator, i had to remove fan so i guess ill be using something small electrical in the front. any of you have advice on choosing fan switch, auto (temp switch) or manual? i think ill use manual switch to avoid auto temp switch failure and problems with high temp.

I was wondering how your automatic transmission is going to work without the ECU telling it what to do. I'm sure you already thought of this but I figured I'd ask Because I'm kinda curious. Nice work man

went really productive today, got to wire up my temporary manual automatic transmission
the beta version of throttle cable holder
hooked cooling lines from the scrap pile of leftover tubes from 3vze and othera various mopeds/motorbikes
also i did short test ride an i am very happy with my swap, torque converter revs it a bit higher on the uphill but it is ok
