new generation swap options (1GR-FE, 2GR-FE, 2TR-FE)
hello
searching for info on some new generation toyota engine swap possibilities. specifically i'm thinking about motors from this generation tacomas (both the 4 cyl and the V6) as well as the 2GR-FE (out of the RAV4). other than winddancer's thread on his 4.0 L 1GR-FE V6 swap i've not found much. it doesn't seem very feasible for my needs anyway so i'm starting to think about other possibilities.
the 2GR-FE has really interesting numbers and doesn't seem to be too big (or heavy) but i don't know what it would take to mate it to an R150F
i'd also be interested in the 2.7 L 2TR-FE out of this generation tacomas. it makes the same power as my 3.slow but probably weights much less (haven't located the exact weight yet) giving a much better power/weight ratio
anyhow, it would be great to start compiling info on other options

If you were ok with putting in an auto Id say go with the 1uz instead. Not very much info on the other swaps you are talking about.
Just recently finished mine and what a difference.

yeah, i've seen the 1UZ info (including your thread, thank you for that btw, wish more people took the time to document swaps like you did) but i'm strictly opposed to autos.

Why would you want the 2GR-FE? It's only high end power. Your truck NEEDS low end power. That link is for an MR2, they don't need low end torque as much as a truck. The 2TR is used in the newer Tacoma but why swap in a 4 banger when you could swap in a 5VZ or a 1GR or heck even a 2UZ.

the 2RT-FE is interesting because it appears (i say appears because i don't have the key piece of data yet) to be much lighter than the 2RZ or the 3RZ. it is all aluminum and has a ton of plastics incorporated to save weight (and cost of course). it also has VVT-i which is better at managing power and fuel consumption than previous generation motors.
check out the chatter on marlin: http://board.marlincrawler.com/index.php?topic=48380.30
this would appear to be the swap of the future for those of us hunting for manageable power without a ton of weight.

just remember the 2rt is drive by wire, so u will need all of the wiring with the electronic gas pedal too. it sounds like a pain to mee, but i would like to see someone swap one of these into an older truck

i know, drive by wire sounds like a total PIA but i am looking for a project to learn more about electronic components. still, i'm a ways from taking this on, just playing with the possibilities at the moment.
i would have to a) verify the weight differential and b) find a way to bolt it up to my r150F trans before i considered doing it.

reviving another dormant thread: any data on weights? found an old post that puts the 3VZE at 350lbs but no other data to verify. there may not be a lot of power difference between the the 3RZ-FE and the 2TR-FE but the weight difference plus the VVTi would definitely be something to factor in. then again there's the drive by wire...

I truly think that the 2TR-FE is the swap to look into or attempt. It bolts to an R series transmission with it's bellhousing so it seems to me the big deal is the electronics. Also, as a note on power, it actually makes more power than a 3VZ-E by a whopping 10 horsepower. It is a tad weaker than the 3VZ-FE numbers wise, but seriously, which one would win the race?
All in all, I think this swap is one that will be doable for the v6 trucks and guys that want better fuel economy and the same horsepower, though it will end up being faster as well I'm sure. If it's documented, I'd love to read up on that swap. It just sounds awesome.

Things I can think of to consider when trying to get a DBW engine in a DBC vehicle is the throttle body, ecu, fuel management (return vs returnless), possible stand alone engine management system, gas/clutch pedal from donor car...
My vote is the 3RZ
