finishing my 2JZ swap
Hi,
Haven't posted in a while on the subject due to several reasons I won't bore you with.
Actually I've been driving it a few years now, but never feeled I needed to finish anything since I never had problems up till last year.
I use it hard, very hard, so everything is in need of an overhaul or repair before something major brakes.
Goal was to use the winterperiod to fix the issues and redo some of the swap to make all wiring and piping easier and simpler. And make the engine easier to work on. And add some horses
So I wanted to replace the NA 2JZ-GE intake with a 2JZ-GTE version, shorten the throttle body, replace MAF with a hotwire AFM with '95 lexus GS300 ECU, shorten intercooler piping and get rid of all the vacuum crap.
And add the GTE injectors and Greddy fuel computer.
So here are photo's from most of it.
Overhauled the gearbox. Worn bearings, synchros, shift forks etc.
Tried to use the 5th gear of a supra gearbox, does fit, but ended up with a 5th of 1:1. Same as 4th gear, so useless.
New OEM clutch started slipping so replaced it with a clutchmaster.
Dunno if it's any good, but I'll soon find out.
Moved the power steering pump down 5" and mounted the resorvoir directly on top of it. Had a new, short, hydraulic pressure hose made eliminating all lines and acc. hoses.
Here's the 2JZ-GTE intake. I had to remove some stuff, add material using the TIG and change a few threadhoes.
I used the middle section of the GTE manifold and welded that to a NA manifold. This is the NA-GTE hybrid, bolting a 2JZ-GTE manifold directly to a NA 2JZ-GE head (with much larger intake diameters!!!).
With this setup I'm gone use the NA fuelrail.
Removed the traction control from the GTE throttle body.

Found this to be broken off also:
$10 solution:
Removing an redoing lines and hoses on the intake side;
Hot wire, intake stuff mounted and blow off valve relocated:
I've taken the engine out once more to finish smalle brackets, engine loom etc .
Now ready to go in:

Had to rewire the loom and found that I had to change the pin connections for the hotwire. Luckily toyota sells all the plugs so this was easy.
There were lots of smalle details, but all not that important.
Still need to do several things, but allready seems to be turning out great.

As soon as it runs I'll give it some TLC and paint, but for now I'm focussing on getting it to run reliable.
I'll hope to have it running this week.

Thanks guys.
Here's what i did today;
Removed the charcoal canister and all lines today and pre-made the hoses for the intake.
Looks like I'm gone have to find a new spot for the igniter and also fab a SS heatshield for the turbo.
Also think I know were to find the +5V for the hotwire on the ECU. That's the last wire to make it run.
Still have to repace the rear light switch and probably the speedo cable since I ripped the engine and gearbox out with my hoist. Without disconnecting anything.
Here's what i did today;

updat: problems
Time for an update.
Got every line hooked up. Finished rewiring the hot wire and tried to start.
Let her turn over to get the oil running first.
Plugged in the ECU, hooked up the battery again and turned her over.
Looks like she wanted to start but immediately shut off.
I now have 5 error codes. From parts that were working fine before and have identical partnumbers if I compare the ECU's in the EPC.
The TPS even is a new lexus part.
14 Ignitor
21 Oxygen
27 sub oxygen
28 O2 sensor
41 TPS
I have gone through both wiring diagrams from part to ECU pinout etc., but nothing. All identical hooked up like supposed to.
Now I'm missing something obviously. So I called a friend and he will send me a lexus engine loom tomorrow so I can check it all.
Looks like I'm not driving anywere soon.

this is sick!!! i remember a while back you saying something about your 2jz, so glad you made a build thread lol. would be awesome to have a 2jz but man they are hard to find and expensive? i was thinking maybe a 7mgte in my standard cab? idk but this i sick

The whole reason for doing this was reliability, performance and cheap and easy to find parts.
So far this swap, for me, was cheaper than overhauling my 3VZE.
Or buying a pickup or 4R replacement engine over here.

it's alive!
Another update.
I checked everything I can think off, but no succes.
Compared the engine wiring looms and rewired my '93 loom to the '97 type again. Still the same error codes.
So I got fed up with it all plus I want to drive it, starting this weekend.
Rewired the loom back to stock since it's only 5-6 wires, put in the '93 ECU, mounted the Karmann (left the hot wire there for now, but unplugged offcourse) and......nothing.
After some cursing and swearing (stillhave to appologize to the neighbours) I read the ECu codes again; 41, which is TPS. And that is the only new part different from the old situation so I started comparing them.
Turns out that the GE and GTE TPS are not identical at all. Since they are mounted on oposite sides of the throttle body, one works CW and the other CCW. Mirrored actually. Unfortunately so are the pin connectors.
But both have the same plug and housing which can be swapped and what gave me the wrong idea that they are identical.
Took the pins out of the plug, put them back in reversed order and adjusted the TPS just to make sure.
First turn of the key she fires up
So I'll finish the details tonight and I'm back on the road tomorrow.
I'll post some pics asap.
