Built 22re turbo Vs. 7mge swap
Hi all. I have a 95 toyota pickup. 22re with a 5spd tranny. Rear wheel drive standard cab.
I bought this truck as a toy and would like to start a conversation.
I want around 200whp. I am torn between finding an old supra with a 7mge that is functional (to do a swap) or picking up a cheap 22re i found locally and building it up for a turbo.
So, used 7mge that likely would still need a rebuild, likely putting down 160-180 whp (and gobs of torque) or a well built 22re putting down (in all honesty) around the same power.
What is more reliable, what is cheaper, what is less trouble.
With the 7mge, i would have to find a proper bell housing to mate it up to my current transmission, or get another transmission (or this is my impression.) Also there would be a good bit of wiring involved.
22re turbo would be a direct drop in replacement + IC work and a piggyback to my ecu and a wideband 02 sensing system for tuning. Id think this would also be the more reliable set up provided it is rebuilt and tuned properly. Again, not shooting for 15lbs of boost here.
I would be collecting parts for several months to a year prior to doing either.
Opinions? Also, whats the word on the transmission/rear end getting killed off by double the stock whp level?
Thanks.
Jon
Edit: I am not new to toyotas, just new to the pickups. Been a car guy all my life, but got a wife... and thus the need for a truck.

or you could swap in a 2rz or a 3rz and do a super charger with it or turbo it and get around 200-250 whp but you would have to use the wiring harness from the truck or whatever you take it out of. you would also have to figure out something with the exhaust because its on the opposite side of the 22re. you would probobally need the r150 family transmission for any of the swaps though, because there more adaptable and stronger.

that swap would increase the budget by about double also. At that rate, why not just go 2jz? I have around a $3k budget (if I had to put a number on it). The cheapest options are built 22r or 7mge. Would an R150 be necessary for a built 22r turbo I wonder? I don't plan on drag racing the thing, just spirited driving occasionally on backroads.

Hm, this is a fair point. I'll go check around this next week and see what I can find. I am near Tuscaloosa Al, so there must be hundreds of cars at yards that were destroyed.
