7mgte motor swap into 80
well i found a smoking deal on an 87 turbo supra. got it home and pulled the motor. looks like it was stored outside for quite awhile with the hood off and half of the IM off. but all and all i am happy with it.
the motor is going into my 80 yota. then my good running 20r is going into an 82 i have in this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f114.../#post51245586.
i have a good block and head lined up with a friend. also arp head studs. should be fun

I am doing a 7mge swap myself (haven't gotten started yet) but there's lots of info around on it. I got my info from TTORA mostly but the main parts are to use 5m motor mounts and they bolt in.....and then you can secure them later by welding. Use the 7m bellhousing to mount up to a w56 tranny but I am going with one of the HD models from marlin and from everything I've read it holds up to the extra power nicely. I'm kinda stuck on what kind of radiator to use. I was thinking one of the 3.slow rads but I'm not sure if that will be the best solution or not. I do know that you have to use electric fans on it though.

got some more parts lined up. bellhousing/flywheel/clutch/slave cyl., block/crank/pistons/arp studs, head/cams, injectors, 5mge upper mounts. going to see about the rad when it is in the truck. the local yard has a bunch of e-fans for $20 each and ford radiators.
cant wait to get it in there.

I cut the upper rad support and lower core support out to assist in putting the motor in, and then used the ac compressor bolts to put the rad in front of the crossmember using the original holes. I'm not worried about the factory latch, so I cut out much of the inner structure of the front of the hood and will use hood pins. I then bent some 1" strap and bolted it across the front to support the longer rad bolts at the front and tie the two sides back together. Rather ghetto, but I don't have a welder and the truck is more or less terminal body-wise. I have a 3-core rad from my 86 truck to use, and an electric fan will fit between the rad and the pulleys...

7mgte 84
swapped the 7mgte into my 84 p/u it was a royal pain. the 5m motor mounts didnt work, provided the parts i got were in fact 5m motor mounts. there are 2 transmssions in the supra, the turbo has a r154 the non turbo has a w58, apparently the w58 bolts up to both the truck trans and the 7m block. the r154 trans is what my donor car had since its a turbo so i took measurements on the truck bell and cut them and welded together, thankfully it came out right had to use a non turbo centerforce clutch since the oe replacement couldnt handle the power and the 35's. it slipped after 3 months. the throttle cable had to be modified the hoses had to be modified. hydraulic hose for the steering pressure line had to be made. i made motor mount brackets and installed rubber isolators between the motor mount bracket i made and the upper portion of the mount. the rear driveshaft is has a front portion off the supra mated to a rear portion off the truck and a slip yoke off a lexus gx470 (longer). the carrier bearing on the drive shaft had to have ears welded onto it to relocate it rearward 2 or so inches and the trans cross member had to have a have a plate welded and gusseted to the back of it to accomodate the farther rearward mounting location of the transmission had to be cut to clearence the front drive shaft subsequently because it hit in 4wd. the a/c compressor hit the frame and will require a bracket to lower it below the frame. i run doors off so im not concerned in it. the radiator - im running supra radiator with a fan controller and 2 10 inch electric fans, theres no room for the taurus fan although alot of supra guys run it, had to cut the rad support to fit and weld tabs onto the frame to retain it while using the supra upper mount brackets modified....it runs hot and overheats on the trail, were still looking into that. had to use a liquid to air intercooler due to space and bolt the wastegate onto the motor mount due to the intake plumbing. the fuel pump would not fit into the fuel tak of the 22r so i used an external fuel pump. complete pain in the butt not for the faint of heart. I'm ASE master technician audi nissan chrysler and lexus certified technician. I wouldnt recomend this swap for a hobbyist. no way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NisCkxU544c

thanks for the offer and the great info. not too worried about the swap too much. i have a full shop with just about everything but a waterjet. i have lots of experience fabricating, wiring, and toyota time.
i am not going to run ac.
if you see anything in the pictures i post up feel free to comment on them if you see something that you ran into on your swap.

got my new block and head. so now time to start putting them together after some machine work. soonest i will be able to really get into doing some serious work will be like mid july (work and family vacation).
i am freaking pumped to get really started. i even have another truck or 2 that i am trying to decide which to put my 20r into. the blue 81 or a 87 i got for $200 because it has a bad motor. i think the 87 will get it due to it is not as much work to get it on the road for bear season.

Bought an 89 supra with hks metal head gasket and arp studs, it had a bad wire to the afm got it running and blew the trans racing a mustang! Haha I'm gonna bookmark this! Here is my build thread, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f152...l#post51789950

i also have found a bunch of threads (mainly looking at install picts etc...):

and i have found many more. found a ton through google image search actually.
the main question (i emailed supracharged.com) is about the clutches. what is the difference between the clutches, between an 87 7mge and the 89 7mge. is it in the throwout bearing or exactly what? i want to order a clutch but am kind of hung on which one. or if it really does not matter. the throwouts are the only visible difference that i see. or would it matter as long as it was will the corresponding pressure plate? they look to attach to the fork the same way but the 89 bearing has the clip and fork contact attached to it and the contact surface to be different.
again as long as they basically fit onto the fork and are the same id (where it slips over the tranny input) they should work right?????
i am only needing to order my clutch now. i have been just cleaning parts and prepping to do final torques and gasket up the sucker.
the hks headgasket i have was previously used and i have been told that you can clean them up and re-use them...BUT upon cleaning i found the HG to have cracks on the outside of the cylinder compression rings and blowby.
SO i am going to use a stock head gasket and use the arp studs and bump up the head torque values.
at this time i am going to go to high steer and put the rear drums off a 85 4x4 pickup into my rear axle (bigger shoes) and put the steering knuckles from a 82 onto my 80 axle so i can put on some fj40 vented disks on there with some ifs calipers. then put on a 1" brake MS.
i also recently got some chevy 63" springs for the rear and am working up some custom 46" springs packs for the front.
