1UZ-FE swap into a 1990 2dr 4runner

After weeks and weeks of reading and deciding what i want to do with my runner i've decided on a 1UZ swap along with SAS for my 1990 2 door v6 auto 4runner.

The patient

I picked up a 1996 Lexus SC400 from NC about a week ago. She had 180k miles and ran beautifully. The exterior and interior of the car were trashed but mechanically everything worked so i was sold. And for $800 too!

Found a 5speed trans from a 94 v6 w/ transfer case for $200

Rented a crane and got to work

Pulled it out with the tranny still attached. Had to have my bigger friend stand on the end of the crane to keep it balanced

Wire Harness all in one piece. Going to send off the harness from the SC and the 4runer to Tweak'd Performance in South Carolina to have the two spliced together.

The computer

Setup my work area to start tearing down the motor

I plan on using the "1UZ complete rebuild kit" from Lextreme to ensure i can get the most life out of this motor as possible. I'll be replacing the water pump, oil pump, all vacuum hoses, and all gaskets and seals. As well as deleting the A/C and hydrolic fan pump.

The steering box will be moved forward on the frame when i get to that and the IFS chopped off to be replaced by a straight axle. I also plan on using factory lexus motor mounts with a custom hood to achieve this swap without a body lift.

If anyone has info they would like to share please feel free. I'm always open for new advice

Looks like a good start. Good luck with the swap, there are a few of us doing the same swap right now as well.

Got some junk yard goods over the weekend for my build.

Power steering Reservoir (since i sold mine from the SC not thinking about it)

A rear spare tire carrier along with the tailgate from a 91 (wasnt planning on buying this but ive wanted one of these since i bought the truck)

and a fan clutch pulley/bracket from a LS400. The bearing is seized though and i cracked the edge of the mounting bracket with my 3 claw puller trying to get that sucker out. No dice. Not really sure how to get that bad bearing out of there other than a press . .

Tire carrier and tailgate

P/S Reservoir

Fan pulley i chipped with my puller, Got both sides at the same time . .

Well i've made no new progress compared to everyone else. Ordered a rebuild kit from Lextreme on the 11th of May and has yet to show up. I know it was lost in shipping somewhere along the line and a new kit should be on its way.

Here's how it sits right now. Ive already cleaned the piston tops, these were taken before

I plan on replacing the valve seals and have the heads machined a little and cleaned

Its been a while since ive made much progress on my swap. the transmission in my truck has died so i guess its time to get my arse in gear and finish this motor.

Picked up a parts washer and cleaned the heads. Took quite a bit of soaking and scrubbing with a brass brush but theyre much cleaner than they were. Im now working on cleaning all of the valves, springs and retainers. This is taking forever since i have to keep all of the valves in order.

Pics in a few days when i get the heads re-assembled and on the block again.

I'm hoping you sold those stupid rims to some youth for $$$ to finance this swap.

Haha, you'de be surprised how many questions/comments i got about those rims.

Sold the whole car (including the 3 ridiculous rims) after getting everything i needed from it and im working on selling my motorcycle to get everything else i need to finish this up

Looking Good so far.

Find a power steering pump from an LS400. The reservoir is built right on to it and you can easily re-use the V6 truck's power steering lines.

Aren't there mounts on the inside of the quarter panel for that tire carrier?

Thanks man, I noticed that in a scrap yard last week searching for a LS fan bracket. Would it be better to use the LS pump and res or keep my SC pump and mount the res away from the engine? After seeing how much my 3.0 P/S res leaks onto the front of the motor, i kinda like the idea of puting the Res somewhere else

If the truck came factory with the tire carrier then yes, there are mounts behind the panel. I could be wrong, havnt pulled out the interior panels to find out for sure.

You shouldn't have any leakage problems with the built on pump. Most leaks come from the fluid lines not the pump. I think it makes a much cleaner installation and you don't have to make a mounting bracket for the reservoir. I'm using an LS pump now but I'm going to switch to the remote reservoir when I install my hydro assist ram just because I need to double to fluid capacity.

So your adding the SC reservoir to the LS pump/res?

I plan to do a hydro assist at some point and am starting to wonder if i should keep the SC pump and get a larger aftermarket reservoir instead of running two factory units modified together. hhmm

No I'm swapping out to the SC pump and getting a PSC reservoir.
