i have a 1990 4runner 3.0 v6 and i really want to make it one of the badest trucks around my town by dropping a bif motor into it and i think the supra is the best choice im just not sure how easy its going to fit into the fram...and what kinda of transmition do it need its automatic now should i leave it auto or make it manual

Looks like an easy swap with tons of potential power, those engines can be tweaked up a lot and still be reliable. I was going to do this swap but decided diesel was the best route for my swap.

With a v6, you'll have to fab mounts...a 22re truck makes life easier as the mounts on the frame can be used if you grab a set of 5m mounts from a pre-87 supra. BIC performance makes mounts to put a 1j or 2j into a 22re 2wd, but am unsure if they work with a 4wd.

is it easier to go diesel or would the motor not bolt up just as bad

I decided against the supra engine because it makes lots of power at high rpm and I rarely get above three thousand rpms now, I'm not looking to run around town lighting tires(though it would be fun to be able to take a sports car of the line with my truck). I also like the simplicity of diesel(no ignition system to worry about). The turbo diesel will make a lot of torque at low rps where I want it, so I can put around town and get some good mileage. It looks like both swaps would require welding for the motor mounts, I don't think either would be a cake walk, but for someone with some mechanical ability neither would take to long to complete.

That 4bt is too heavy for my taste, like over 700lbs they only put out 105hp and 265ft/lbs stock, They are great engines but better suited in my opinion for a larger 4x4, not a mini-truck.

The engine that I am going with is a VW 1.9TDI. From what I have found the VW 1.9TDI weights in around 297lbs comes with 100hp and 150ft/lbs stock, this should push me around just fine and if i want more it is easily attained from this engine, from my research can be tuned to twice those figures with a few adjustments and parts. I will be starting a thread about this swap as soon as I get the engine to the house and start preparing it for the install.

Though, I would still like to try a supra turbo engine into a truck/4runner, would be a real fun "sleeper truck", would love to be able to smoke a rice rocket or old bald dude in a sports car with a truck running 35" tires.

You can get a Toyota diesel that will bolt in a lot easier from an other country, but you will not have much support to find parts, plus from my research they do not put out a lot of power for their displacement, I am sure that they will last a long time being tuned down like that though. If you have a big stack of cash it would be a good idea. My friend drove one of these Toyota trucks with a diesel in it around in Nicaragua and loved it.

you can get even more power out of the VW 1.9TDI there are chip kits that will wake it up... adding an intercooler will help too...

yeah my grandad had a little toyota truck that was deisel but it was only 2wd ill look into that vw engine sounds like a good way to go... what do you think it would get on fuel

this is what i would do.. first think to yourself? what is my end goal?
do i want my rig to what? have big tires, solid axles, low gears and rarely see the highway?
or do i want more power to run bigger tires, have a few extra mods (bumpers/sliders) that may weigh down the truck, but yet be able to drive it 130 miles to the trail and back, then to work or school on monday?

this will help you decide, or maybe it will just confuse you more?

well i would really want to have two trucks and do them both but i think i rather have a truck i can get to school with but i dont care about the higher and i need to have some pullin power

well i don't know anything about any of these diesel swaps i bet there knarly off road with all that torque down low..
just remember that just because you have a an extra 150hp doesn't mean your trucks towing capacity goes up.
on the other hand if you add more power it will tow much better than before there are a lot of engine options available just need to pick a direction and go for it.

first of all if your going to do a supra swap get a donor car im doing a 5m swap in my 90 runner i got a full engine swap minus the nickel and dime stuff for 300... yes you have to build mounts it wasnt to bad! the transmission is easy u need a trans and tcase from a 22re pickup not sure for the auto part but with a supra pre 87 trans you can use the belhousing off the supra for the 22re trans direct bolt up! the hardest part is the wiring. you have to move your fuel to the driver side, slave cylinder to the driver side and battery and starter to driver side there is lots of work but worth it in the end!
