1989 Pickup 3VZ to 5VZ from 1998 4Runner 4x4 Manual Trans 89661-3D362 ECU

<strike>I have been searching and searching through the forums and I cannot figure out for sure what wire should go to which connector. I have some of them figured out, but if somebody could give some insight it would be greatly appreciated. And please before anybody says "use the search before posting questions that have been covered before" I have done my research and I still cannot find the info I need.</strike>

It seems that since my truck is part of the "new" or "mid model year" it is hard to find good info. Anyways Here is what I have put together from the EWD I got from TIS. I used the 1990 4Runner EWD because the plugs and colors lined up and the 1998 4Runner EWD.

**I have noticed depending on which side of the connector your are looking at I.e 'Chassis side or ECU side' the wire colors may differ. My pinouts are all based on the ECU side of the harness.**

The pinouts from the 1990 4Runner EWD are as follows:
In the EWD all connections are labled as IH1 or IH2.

IH1 - 16 Pin Connector
IH2 - 16 Pin Connector

These pinouts are for a 1989/1990 Truck/4Runner.
****These pinouts match my 1989 4WD Xtra Cab Pickup with 5 speed Manual transmission.****
****The Manufacture date on my Door Tag is 12/1988****
****These pinouts may or may not match your truck.****
I have also included the pins for the Auto Transmission

OBDII Connector Pinout

OBDII Port Pin 4 goes to GND, Pin 5 goes to DataLink Connector 3 Pin SG, Pin 7 goes to DataLink Connector 3 Pin SIL or SDL depending on EWD, and Pin 16 goes to 12V Power through a 7.5A fuse

Swap Wiring

**I think I have all of my wiring figured out. Maybe it will help somebody in the future.**

Here is a link to a spreadsheet I started on my swap wiring. Can somebody take a look and see if anything needs to be changed? The document opens in Google Drive so no software needed to open it.

3.0 to 5VZ Swap Wiring Spreadsheet

The Plan.

I'm just getting everything figured out before I start the swap. I need as little down time as possible. Hopefully when it comes time to actually do the work I can get it done in 2 or 3 days. I have read almost every swap thread on this forum so I have a good idea of what needs to be done. I will be picking up some IH1 and IH2 pigtails today and get the wiring done without modifying my current harness. I will try and make a detailed write up as I go.

Update

Just updating anyone reading this thread. I've been having a hard time finding the pig tail connectors that I need. I've also been looking for a stock exhaust setup from a 98 4Runner and the stock airbox and MAF. Other than that I have run short on funds due to my little puppy developing some illness and going blind. I'll update the thread when I can make some progress.

I've found all of this pretty helpful for my particular swap. I think one or two things may be funky in your spreadsheet but I'm not far enough along to know one way or the other. Thanks! Keep us updated.

Haven't updated in awhile.

I don't have anything to update. Just let you guys know I haven't abandoned the project. I just got a new house and have been working on repairs before I can move in. I'll give an update when I get back to the project.

For anybody wondering, the illness my puppy had was a brain tumor or brain lesion. I had to put her to sleep.

Also sorry to anybody who needs the automatic trans wiring diagram, I know my spreadsheet includes the wires from the 98 4Runner Auto but I did not include the wires for the 89 Pickup Auto. I do have the EWD's still though, I may end up adding the info when I get the free time. Also if you would like the EWD's I can try and email them to you, they are in PDF format.

**EDIT**

The pinout for the Auto trans 89 pickup are in post #1

I'm sorry about loosing the puppy. One of the reasons I always tell guys to try to find a complete donor. Or find one donor from someone and get all the parts together bundled. That way you have everything you need.

Ya, I actually got the engine from someones previously failed attempt at the swap. I have most of the components for it except for the few things I have listed. I'm sure I'll find it. Luckily the engine was just given to me. So I haven't spent anything on it except time.

Thanks for your kind words, I miss my lil puppy.

Well looks like you've done a good job. I've got mostly everything I need but the harness swap has thrown me way off course. I have located every wire color but can't quite put them all together. sometimes when it seems fairly easy to read something else gets spliced on the diagram. I've got to hand it to all of the guys that finalized this swap.

Do we need to edit the title to reflect the correct part number?

Please change it to reflect the correct part number. That would be great.

So after moving and getting a second job I am finally back to getting my swap started. As you guys have seen in my previous posts I was figuring out all of my wiring, well I've got it all figured out and I have completed my conversion harness. I will post pics later. I originally was going to use my pickup connectors IH1 and IH2 for the harness, but since I already had the plugs cut from my 94 4Runner I decided to use what was already cut and transfer my pickup connectors to the 4Runner. I am just going to repin the connectors on each vehicle. So now in my spreadsheet for wiring I have a spot for which wire goes where in each vehicle. Here

I got the stock intake, MAF, crossover and exhaust and the VSV's, I am ready to get my BAR tag. I will be taking pictures and posting them as I complete the swap, I cant start til my next day off which is Wednesday so you guys should be hearing back from me then. Also I included in my spreadsheet a link to a zip file I made of all the EWD's I used, which are 90 pickup, 90 4 Runner, 94 Pickup, 94 4Runner and 98 4Runner. My spreadsheet also has pics of the connectors that I am working with.

Ok so I made a little progress today. I was trying to figure out a way to keep all of my stock accessories because I don't have the 3.4 accessories and it would be out of my budget to find them. Anyways I ended up modifying my 3VZ A/C bracket and using the 3VZ crank and water pump pulleys. The pumps are still in the truck but here is how the bracket looks. Everything lines up perfect, although I may need to make or buy some standoffs for the A/C pump since the 5VZ casting is slightly different and some tabs poke out a little further. Oh ya, I also got my 3.0 dipstick in and mounted, nothing too hard but I'll post pics of that later, I forgot to take pics of it.

The room between the water pump pulley and the A/C belt is very minimal with this setup. You can see in this pic that the pulley is sitting on the belt by a hair. I think when I get it running it might smoke for a second from the rubbing, but the belt itself should be fine. If not then I will put the pulley on a lathe and take off 1mm or so.
