Overheating... Need help!

I've searched and not really coming up with the answers I think I need. Here goes:

1986 Pick up 4wd 22re

Overheated on way to work one day. Filled radiator & overflow, and overheated on way home. Filled up again to make it home.

Replaced thermostat. Still overheating. pulled into driveway (after new thermostat testdrive) and opened hood to let cool and watch the fun little bubbles (i'm delerious). Alternator starts on fire (another problem). Go to get new (rebuilt) alternator and water pump. Take old waterpump off and looks fine. Sooo... what's the problem. Oil is good, no froth, no smoke (when it was running) I have pulled the radiator and may replace it. It looks in... well... 1986 shape.

What am I missing here? Please help.

May be time to have your radiator professionally cleaned. It's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new one. I just had mine rodded and rebuilt (top end) for $88.

What are the operating conditions when it overheats? Driving fast or slow or stopped. Outside temps high or low? Heater on or off? Does it boil over then get hot or does it get hot them boil over?

Outside temp = 80's, driving fast, but does not cool down when slowing or stopped. heat on and off, tried on for a while but did not lower temp guage. It boils over after it gets hot (red line) then alternator catches on fire

While taking everything apart to get to water pump and alternator, I checked it and it seems ok.

Update

Well, I ordered a new radiator from Radiatorbarn.com ($114 shipped) and new alternator (see above post) cut the guts out of my thermostat so coolant/water is constantly flowing, kept my old waterpump (returning the new) and IT WORKS!!!! Turns out it was the radiator. I was going to have mine checked, but after finding out pricing and doing some YotaTech searching for aftermarket radiators, I'm happy that I went new.

Now that everything is working again, I'll put in the new thermostat. I had bought the new one from Autozone. Does anyone know if I really really need to go oem?
