97 4Runner..problems starting

From time to time, the truck will not start. Just a click and that's it. Trying again usually does it.

I checked the starter wires for corrosion, but they look fine.

Any idea what it might be?

Wanted to add, yesterday when I tried to start the truck I saw an arch under the ignition cover.

It is the starter, search around for topics and your questions will be anwsered.

It is a fairly regular topic around here, I have replaced mine, but the part was on backorder and took a few days.

Looks like you can replace just the contacts per a link I found. I might go that route, especially if it's cheaper.

Yes, it's a lot cheaper. Check out Roger Brown's site for the info in replacing the contacts. It's about 17 bucks from the dealer.

Yup its the starter just rebuild it instead of buying a new one which would cost like 300 bucks!

I bought my contacts from Roger, pulled the starter, replaced them, and had it back in in under 1HR. Works great.

Usually quite easy to replace the copper contacts inside the starter solenoid. That is usually the cause of the "click":

Hardest part is removing the starter itself but you can go the the tech section for the procedure in removing the starter.
