1st gen fuel gauge issues

ok, new problem. When full my fuel gauge reads full, when it drops down to 3/4 it suddenly falls to "walk" <- below empty. Ideas before I start looking?
Sending unit, gauge head.. any one with similar issues, cures?

Likely the sending unit, mine did the same thanks to the PO installing a new batter bas-ackwards:
