Throw me some ideas
Mkay so I have run into a tight budget and can no longer afford to to the 2jz swap like I wanted to. I have a 1994 3.slow and would like to find a better motor but keep my transmission and everything the same. Anyone know what the best motor I should go with?
If your in a budget crunch just how much can you really afford??

I don't have any actual experience with engine swaps, but I've thought a lot about doing one in my trucks.
Here's what I've found regarding pricing in my area:
- Rebuilt motors are roughly $1200 for a long block (both 22re and 3slow, more for other engines)
- If you want a shop to swap it in for you, add another $800
- Shop that will rebuild YOUR engine and install, $3k
For all the 3.4L, 2rz/3rz and 2jz vehicles:
- Parted out engine w/wiring harness and ECU, but no exhaust parts, unknown condition usually - $800-1600
- Running, wrecked vehicle at salvage yard - $2k+
- Running, non-wrecked vehicle with high miles from private party - $2k+
I've been more looking toward a 1uz swap - usually any week I can look on CL and find at least 2 running and driving Lexus LS400s for under $1500. Nice thing about buying the whole car that runs/drives is you can go out and test it out, then you also get to part out the vehicle and hopefully recoup at least half of your investment. This is the route I plan on taking, likely will do a 1uz swap on my 1975 Hilux because I can run it smog-free.

I think it depends a lot on what purpose you're building it for and what you want to spend.
In stock NA form, the 1uz has more torque and HP. It's also shorter and lighter.
The 2jz is a FANTASTIC engine no-doubt, but to many people out there it needs to be boosted to see its potential and get into that 600hp range = lots of $
So to me when I see both vehicles/engines selling for the same price, the 1uz just makes sense to me....and because v8!
