UPDATE 22R, pulleys dont line up with Harmonic Balancer

Hey guys, I'm having a bit of a problem. Today was the install of my new power steering pump, all went well, until. I went to put the belt on and nothing lined up correctly causing the belt to be all caddywhompus...it is almost as if the HB is too short? Here are some pictures, and I'll try and post a video once I can get better reception.

Shoot! Well I found my answer, I have a 2-row pulley for non P/S. I need the "#2 pulley" for accesory i.e. power steering (3 row) Hopefully I can find one from a local junkyard and don't have to buy a new one.

Which year of 22RE will work, since those are more common? thanks in advance.

Thanks piglett, I figured it out. I have not found the part though, all the local pick and pulls seem to not have one? I have found that the Celica or mini-truck have the part I need. Hopefully tomorrow I can find a 22R/E with the power-steering pulley on the HB still.

Like others have mentioned, you are missing the Power Steering Pulley. It is just another pulley added to the harmonic balancer with 4 bolts. Power Steering back in the day was more like a bolt on option.

In all fairness, so was AC. Yet that pulley is on everybody's HB. Like everybody needs/wants AC, but can probably live without PS. Seems sorta backwards to me.

Thanks guys! I located one at the junkyard today along with a Taurus E-fan.

All was well until, I went to fire up the truck to adjust the fan switch and this awful sound magically appeared. Truck seems to have plenty of power besides the nasty noise. I can't see well at night, looks to be that the powersteering pulley it tapping the HB?

It seems to quiet some when I turn the wheels, which makes me think it wasn't aligned properly.

Pulled from a 1980 mini truck

We struck gold!

1990 Taurus fan

I can cut a straight line, but can not draw one 🤓

It clears!

Any advice?

The nasty....

If you look closely, it does look a bit wobbly? Tomorrow I'm going to take the pulley off and see if it still makes the noise. Finger crossed🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hate to say it but, ditch the Taurus fan and go back to the stock clutch one. I had nothing but problems with mine. It couldn't keep my truck as cool as the stock fan while sitting at idle or while climbing any big hills or steep grades in the summer. I didn't notice any MPG or power gains from it either. Other people on here had similar issues and returned to a stock setup also.

I was unable to get the video to pull up on my computer ( which is a dinosaur). I have heard of some harmonic balancers can actually separate at the rubber. They are not a solid piece of metal that you may think they are and might could be a possibility. I have replaced a harmonic balancer and just cant remember why.

I would go back to the fan clutch too.

MudHippy...I too always thought Toyota had their options backwards. I will take power steering over ac any day. AC is good for a few months but Power Steering is used everyday.

Well we woke up to about 3" of snow....started wrenching on the rig, low and behold. The pulley was very loose! Tightened it up as best I could, purrs like a kitten in fresh linen. 😋

So I decided to take it for a test spin around the blocks, I went over a speed bump..heard the sound of crunching metal. The fan shifted and the cotter pin holding the fan to the motor shaft bit my radiator. Fluid everywhere; limp home. Now the radiator is destroyed...I only did this mod because my clutch fan was cracked everywhere. Which I was afraid of it coming apart and sending shrapnel all over the engine compartment I.e. The radiator. Oh the irony!
