FJ landcruiser front axle for a SAS?

i got a 79 fj60 axle complete with vented rotors, etc.... i wanted to know if anyone has done a SAS with this axle. i have a 90 runner that i want to SAS so i wanna hear some feedback on this. if im not mistaken, all of the parts on this axle like the knuckles, inner axles, etc. is identical to the mini truck axle except for the diff right?? i used the search button and didnt find much info. ill post pics of the axle....any info is appreciated. thanks

thanks. i read that post and that guy didnt end up doing the swap. i want to know if anyone here has actually done this. i bought the trailgear SAS kit already and i just want to see if someone has done this swap with any problems or major mods. im gonna do the spring over on the axle.

did the trail gear rotors work on your axle?
i have THIS AXLE and am gonna rebuild the axle and do the swap.. i plan on doing a coils lift to match and leafs up front for now...
its the perfect sized to match rear axle and the diff is 4.10 geared.. a match for me!

there was a post about this because i looked into it when i first got my axle a year ago... ill search because im planning on working on it now that my truck is running good!

the rotors in the trailgear kit is actually fj rotors. im not to sure on my diff though, i just know it has a 9.5" ring gear...

the knuckles and arms look to be the same as the 79'-85', 8" mini truck axle...please correct me if im wrong.

the knuckles should be identical, your lucky you have vented rotors instead of those wimpy solid ones i had on my 4cyl yota front.

do yourself a favor and ditch the warn hubs. Spring under mounts instead of spring over...
you might want to check out ih8mud.com (Cruiser forum)to find out about those axles. 40 Axles are not the traditional first choice for an SAS conversion. Now if it was an FJ80 E-locker

.....It'd be a much more expensive swap, since you can't use leaves on those without a total hackjob steering set up. Gotta link em. Also high steer is 700 bucks.

However, I have one, and am planning someday to hang it when I get bored of my IFS. They are very cool! Just pricey.

what kind of hubs do you recommend? i checked out ih8mud.com and didnt really find anything about using this axle to SAS a runner. is there something wrong with these axles that people dont use them for SAS? i know the mini axles are easier to find and its easier to find parts but is there a big drawback to using the fj axles for SAS?

i got aisin hubs on my fj 60 axle.. they are white faced!!!

The only drawback is being less common besides the weight. FJ60 Axles will be heavier, as the axle housing is considerably heavier, the inner axle shafts larger and stronger than mini parts. I have ran them with up to 38's and had not problems on different projects - I would say go for it.
Just don't call them FJ axles as most Landcruiser guys will take that badly! That model Axle is from a FJ60, or FJ62.

is the axle shafts interchangeable with the minis? basically everything from knuckles to steering arms, etc. is the same as the mini right? ill do a write up as soon as i start the SAS. im just trying to get all the info i can because no one has any record or write up of doing a SAS with this axle...

as for calling it fj axles.........ill refer to it as fj60's from now on..LOL!

does anyone know how to tell the difference between a fj40 and fj60 axle?? ive been getting mixed reviews about the fj40 being 58" wms to wms and the fj60 being 62" wms to wms and vise versa......also, what does full float and semi float mean?? newbie questions....LOL!

FJ60 isn't that wide. Its about 59-58 ish IIRC. An FJ80 front is 62.5.

Full float vs semi float.

Semi float axles are standard in the back of mini trucks. The axle shaft has a bearing pressed onto it, and sits in the tube. Thus, the axle shaft supports the weight of the truck.

Full float axles are much better. A full float axle is where the wheel is supported by a hub which has bearings inside, that slides over a spindle, which is bolted to the axle tube. the axle shaft slides through the spindle, and into the diff, and is attached to the hub via drive flange or manual hub lockouts. This way, the axle shaft supports no weight. Front axles are usually full float.

The great part about full float vs semi float is that, with a semi float, should you break a rear axle shaft or rear diff, you're hosed. You have to either replace on the spot, or drag it out doing further damage. With a full float, you can remove the drive shaft, and drive flanges/unlock the rear hubs, and drive out in front wheel drive.

i dont know if i have a fj40 or a fj60 axle. ive been getting mixed measurements on axle width from here, pirate4x4, and ih8mud. the axle that i have has the smaller bolt pattern for the steering arms. i tried to put the mini truck steering arms on the axle and the bolt pattern on the mini truck arms is a wider pattern. im thinking that i have a 76'-78' fj40 axle???

FJ60 and FJ62 axles are (58.5"). FJ40 and Mini Truck axles are the same width (55.5").

I'm putting a widened FJ62 front axle (65" ish) and a FJ80 (63.5") rear axle under my 4Runner this year.
