Need help with 85 pickup purchase

I am new to this Toyota world. I am planning to purchase 1985 extended cab Toyota pickup. The current owner is asking 6500 for it. From the pictures it has some rust on it. The location is too far for me to just go and take a look.

The current owner mentioned that he bought the truck 6-7 months ago and do not know anything about the maintenance work done by previous owner. From CARFAX I noticed that it has 139,xxx miles in 2003 and now it has 141,xxx miles in 2012. That is roughly 200 miles in 10 years. He said that the previous owner stored it in a garage.

At least for now, I am not planning to go off-road with it. This winter it would be my daily driver. I live in West Virginia (snow and salt). I appreciate if you guys give some information from the pictures and information that is there. What do you guys think about the rust? How much it is worth?

Thanks much in advance,
Heleto.

P.S: I did not realize that I can start a new thread in this section, so asked a question to ChefYota4x4 as well through a PM.

BUMP! ..., Hey there, Heleto, ... BUMP!

So, Looking at a couple more pics, the panels behind the doors and apparently even the doors have a bit of rust on em... (Again, like in the PM's, ..... 'Can't tell how much it is... or if they've gone in and removed and then resealed it up a couple times).... And the bottom is a LIL more rusty than I thought from the smaller pics on EBay... BUT, as I also said, "I've seen MUCH worse.... Still, you'd need to tackle that right away.... Get it sealed up(or at least the first summer you come to)......

I told him I'd have a hard time even offering 5K ......WITHOUT LOOKING at it, IN PERSON, and fully checking out every aspect. 6,500$ is a LOT of cabbage...(for me, anyhow)... AND, I ALWAYS feel uncomfortable 'SUGGESTING' "GO FOR IT" in purchases like this... Heck, my buddy is thinking over a 1,400$ purchase right now... and I don't really want to urge him on in that one... BUT, in that case, I COULD go look at it if he asked. That's a lot safer buy, even if he doesn't keep it, parting it out wont hurt him much/might even make some..... In YOUR case, Heleto, .... that's not gonna happen.... You could never part this out and make up 6,500$(Not that you'd need to, just saying).....

On the other hand, it may very well be worth 5K$ or so... BUT, again, not knowing whether that guy lied to this kid..... Not knowing if it has 359K Miles on it, rather than 141.... And now, seeing the floor.... It's RUST, I thought it was a rubber floor in that small pic I saw, hahaha... But HEY, at least it's not lead to HOLES that I can see... And, at least the kid was honest, right? He DOES have to show everything on Ebay if he doesn't want to get sued, etc... BUT, he showed great detail to you, right away when you asked... Gotta give him props for that, lol.

200 Miles a year? Wow, Heleto.... Again, like our convo...... REALLY hard to believe.

Can I make a suggestion? I know you're in WV...... But, maybe look into one in CA.... It'll be rust free, most often, and you'll pay WAY less than in other parts of the country. This thing will need at least a 1000$ in rust repair and frame clean up, etc.... Who knows what else, as rust effects EVERYTHING else, as well, ya know? Brakes, Axles, Suspension, Body Mounts, ....... it's a long list.

Best wishes.... NOT trying to be a debbie downer..... Just don't wanna see you regretting this. I found one the other day in L.A., CA for 3500$ ... Needed a bit of work... TOTALLY stock... very lil rust. Carpet, etc.. Just needed a HG and paint... Then, saw another for around 6K$.... SPOTLESS, gears added, hi steer, suspension, no rust, loaded... So, you really gotta tell me something.... Why so sold on THIS ONE? Is it the exact rig, with color and pattern, 22RE, that you've been looking for, for a long time?

Thanks for your opinion guys.
No Chef, I was not sold on this. I was looking for a DD in winter, to use it for hauling my motorcycle in summer and do some camping. It had a good combinaiton for these activities. However, $6500 was too much for me. Since I am a novice in these, was asking your suggestions.

I happened to call the seller today and said that I am ready to offer 4500; he said he will pass.

Anyways as you guys suggested, I will have my eyes wide open...

Thank again.

Well my friend, I think u realized that it is too much money. The truck looks good, eventhough the rust and all can be blasted off and have a nice coat of under coating or rust oleum paint, takes time and money. Have no idea how the engine is doing is a risk. It would be a great idea to test drive it how I did when I bought my truck. Paid for it $5,000 in two parts 12years ago and the truck was in great conditions and still is after all I've done to it. Good luck if u deside to get it...!

$3500 MAX. That rig looks pretty good rust wise, honestly I wouldn't drive it in the winter w/o washing it very regularly.

I'd love to have that topper and rear bumper though... I wonder he'd part with them.... If he wanted 6500 for the truck, he prob would want 2500 for the topper and bumper... I'll pass... Lol.

But if you could get some close ups of the bumper, I wouldn't be upset....

Nothing wrong with looking, Heleto..... I wish ya the best

PS> As I said, I wasn't trying to be Debbie downer... BUT, ... I TOLD YA you'd likely get this response from the 'nose that knows' crowd, lol... I'm no expert... But after buying and selling 20+ vehicles... Rebuilding many motors... Looking things over REALLY well on higher dollar purchases.... I've learned a few things about this stuff... and I tell ya, ... just made me tooooo nervous, all the variables.

And btw.... these guys have these ads in L.A. Craigslist allllllllll the tiiiiiiiiiime! They start out high... then 6 MONTHS LATER, I still see the thing in there... but around 1/3rd less... Often still too high... BUT, bottom line? THEY HAVE EVERY RIGHT to ask whatever they want. Just as you have the right to use the path of wisdom and not impulse, right? ... I think you're making a wise choice. If you planned to keep it forever... who knows, it could pay off in the end. But starting out that high... it should be "Rebuilt motor with so and so parts and receipts, proven miles, new brakes, new this and that, gears, lockers, etc. AND, on top of that, for that kinda money.... I would expect no rust... Some would pay 7500$ for that list.. The thing is, they'd KNOW it would be MUCH less likely to cost them another 3K$ in the next couple years.... And trust me, IT DOES NOT take much to rack up that much in expenses/repairs over a couple years!

You'll find something, Heleto... don't sweat it. You've tried CL in that area?

@Chef Sure, I will keep my eyes open. You are so right. I looked through CL in California prices are much different. Surely I have to listen to someone like you with all that experience. Honestly I am learning so much here just by going over your builds and suggestions. I am glad I found this forum

@noodle85yoda... lucky you. Hopefully I will join the club soon.

Surprisingly that bed isn't too bad for a 2nd Gen. When I bought my 84 ex cab in 1991 in Alaska the bed was in worst shape.
Frame is OK, would take a hammer and screwdriver to it though.

It has cool bumpers but as you know the cab needs help. $3.5k max

Thumbs up

I am not sure why this sale is hitting me again. This time he listed it for $5400; planning to grab this opportunity. Thanks for all the input guys, especially Chef.

I live 10 hours away; so as Chef mentioned planning to do a PPI remotely. Please let me know if you recommend anyone for a PPI in that area. The truck is in Harwinton, Connecticut.

Another question I have is about the tires. Looks like it has 33x12.5 tires; I read about possibility of burning clutch if run on regular gears (4.10?). Is this an issue? How could we know if there was any upgrade in gears?

Will be talking to him tomorrow. Anything else I should be asking. Thanks again for the input guys.

My belated pleasure! Lol....

33's would call for 4.88 gears to be accurate on the odo/speedo.... And furthermore, it would be a dog on hills to some degree.

84-88 PU-Manual Trans;

Stock: 225/75/15(28" roughly=4.10)

31=4.56
33=4.88
35=5.29
37=5.71

Pretty sure ^^^^^^^^^^
