1988 4runner seeks to compete on TopGear
Saturday, March 1, 2008 - John & Gabrielle from NJ were returning through Oklahoma from a month of camping out near Las Vegas NV, with a 1988 4runner (stock, NJ rust) and a 1988 popup travel trailer.
Tread peeled off the right rear tire of the truck at 60 miles per hour (or whatever is max speed of a 1988 3vze with a popup and loaded full of camping stuff) and they went into a spin... slid backwards down an embankment off I-44 and crashed into some trees.
The people were fine, but ended up totaling the trailer but the truck had 2 Cory marks:
The back was bashed in about 12" from a tree (reminiscent of the stump incident) from topper to bumper, and the battery tie-down (which was loose) let go and the battery made contact with the closest pulley...
People from my church stopped to help, so Sunday morning everybody came to church and found the '88 4runner in the parking lot with 2 blown rear tires. Replaced them, patched the hole in the gas tank from the Tpost that went into it, put all they could from the trailer into the truck, and they were back on the road.
Made it back home just fine.
John said he took about 60 photos of the wreck... I'm trying to get at least a few of those to post up.
