85 1 ton instrument cluster swap

Greeting all! I have a 1985 Toy 1 ton and would like to upgrade my instruments to something besides the typical idiot lights. I understand that it is possible to retrofit an SR-5 cluster to my truck, but which years of donor trucks/four runners should I be looking at?Since my truck does not have a tach, I saw one post that showed a plug under the hood where the tach hookup was. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. And by the way, I sold new Toyota in the DFW metroplex from 1985-87, we could not GIVE trucks, Four Runners or Land Cruisers away, especially the 1 ton trucks. After driving a 1986 Extra cab deluxe 2wd for 19 years and 386,000 miles without a problem, these vehicles were much unappreciated by the masses. Not any more....

Welcome to Yotatech!

Yes, it is definitely possible!

You can search for SR-5 gauge cluster swap for more information.

There are a few different styles but all can be made to work properly.

You can use 1984-1988 trucks and 1984-1989 4Runner clusters.

Do you have the 22r or the 22re engine?

Generally it is "plug and play" if you have the 22re. Usually for the 22r, you will not have the factory wire to run the tachometer so you will need to run one from the "diagnostic tach plug" on the ignition coil (the plug that should have a rubber cover that is not connected to anything) to the cluster. Some people hook the wire to one of the screws on the back of the cluster board (which I do not recommend) and others (like me) insert the wire where it would have been in the factory harness plug. I forget exactly which pin on the connector it is.

Also, if you get a cluster from a V6, you will need to adjust the tach to read properly.

And you will need an oil pressure sender for a gauge. Right now you have an oil pressure switch for the "idiot light" setup and you can fry the gauge if you plug it in with out changing out the sender.

Here are a few great threads that has a lot of the information you are looking for. The first one is for the 1984-1988 trucks and the second one is for 1989-1995 trucks. Both are lengthy but are great to read.

Just be aware that the coolant temp gauge on SR-5 gauge clusters are known to have issues from old age as can be seen here:

Good luck! These are much better looking clusters in my opinion.
