On my 1996 4Runner, recently there has been a problem with the headlamps. When I wiggle the headlight turn on switch (the left and right blinker lever), the headlights will turn off briefly. Another thing is that when going down the road after hitting a bump or even just normal driving on the street, the headlights will shutter on and off really quick. I am assuming that whats happening is that there is a loose electrical connection somewhere. Does anyone have any idea what the connection could be or where it would be? I am not sure if it could simply be between the battery and the headlights, or somewhere between the switch to turn them on and the lights. It seems like it will be a simple fix but it would be nice to try and pinpoint some locations to test before taking apart the entire dash.

Not sure why you would pull the dash apart.Till every other option has been explored.

****Is it only the head lights or is it the whole electrical system and you see just the head lights???

Look for physical damage to the wiring Most times a loose connection will cause a fuse to open from the arcing .

It does not take much corrosion to cause problems

Start at the bulb connections

Check that the fuses and head light relay are tight in the sockets

The headlights ground on both the right and left door posts

There is a flash option in the head light switch that does flash them off

Did anything happen when this started days off pouring rain??

Add any aftermarket electrical goodies ??

Do any work on the vehicle ??

A Multimeter is a must for trouble shooting electrical gremlins

It is not the whole electrical system, just all the headlights and running lights turn off randomly. I am assuming it is a loose connection or corrosion as you've said. I will diagnose with the Multimeter and keep you posted if I figure out the problem

Don`t be afraid to grab the wires and shake them to try cause the problem

Did you perhaps get water down in the fuse block??
