1983 Pickup 4x4 Charging Issue
Hello all,
My first post and I hope it's posted in the correct forum, and I hope someone can help me. I've got a 1983 Pickup 4x4 22r that I bought a while back that wasn't running and I'm just really starting to work on it. After rebuilt head, new distributor, water pump, and Weber 32/36, it now runs. Presently having issues with charging. I've read about some of the different alternator conversions and think that is my issue because the regulator is NOT connected and there is no plug for it. The engine will run as long as the battery is connected, but dies as soon as it is disconnected. New alternator installed is a black round plug type which matched what was on it when I got it. From what I've read, the alternator is an internal regulator version. There are some stray wires near the regulator coming off of the harness. Below is a picture of those wires. I'm confident with mechanical issues but terrible at electrical issues. I need help determining where these wires go and if this is due to the internal regulator alternator. This is how it was when I purchased it. Any help appreciated.

You never want to disconnect a battery with the engine running
Good way to cause all sorts of damage.
Your going to have to figure out what alternator you have to figure out whats wrong
Wire from B terminal to fuse block in good shape ??
Battery terminals clean and tight??

Thanks wyoming, I've done that for years and never heard that about the battery. Terminals are clean, but it will be a day or so before I can dig into the wires. Having to make up my work time in the evening from running my daughter back and forth to work. The head gasket on her car kicked the bucket.
I did start reading Kawazx636 build and found some responses he and I think you had made to a conversion thread that I printed out. It was very detailed (5 pin / 6 pin, colors, etc.) and I think I'll be able to follow it. I'll post an update after I spend some time on it AND check the wire to the fuse block. Thanks.
Edit: I should add that not only does the engine shut off when I disconnected the battery (not doing that any more though), but all of my gauge/warning lights went off as well because I only had it running for a seconds before I had my son pull the cable. So zero power being made. Going to get the meter out during my next attempt.
