Sequential Blinkers/Parking Lights - For most toyotas

This is the pretty simple way to get your turn signals and parking lights to oscillate back and forth when you turn on your turn signal. Meaning that as your turn signal blinks, so will your parking light but only when the turn signal is off. Also this will only work when you parking lights are on. If you still dont get it dont worry, it's pretty cool.

***note: The write up is for my '01 runner but should work on just about any other vehicle and the wiring should be the same as well on most Toyotas.

Many places sell a device online called a wig wag controller that basically does what im about to show you how to do but cost a lot more than it takes to do this mod and is way more involved. Dont let the electrical work fool you. This is very simple and can be done by anyone that knows how to work with wires at all.

However, do this at your own risk.

All you will need is:
Tools:
Drill with phillips bit
Cutters
Wire strippers
Crimper
Knife
(optional but preferable)
Soldering Iron

Materials:
SPDT Relay x2 (one for each side of the vehicle)
Spade type connectors (that will fit on the blades of the relays)
Barrel Connectors (Or solder if you want to be legit)
Terminal Connectors (The one with a loop on the end)
16~ gauge wire (5ft or so. Preferably different colors)
Electrical Tape
Self tapping screw (Needs to be pretty short, like 1/2")
(optional)
Zip ties
Heat Shrink
Wire Loom

We'll start with the most dreaded part to get it out of the way: wiring up the relay. Take your relay, spade connectors, and wire. Cut two pieces of wire about 8" or so each, one wire about 3", and one wire about 2-3 feet long. On each one of your wires crimp a spade connector at one end. On the two pieces that are 8" crimp a barrel connector on the other ends (or leave exposed to solder later). On the 3" wire crimp a terminal connector on the other end. And on the long wire, leave bare for now.

8" wires - connect one to pole 30 and one to 87a (the middle pole).

3" wire - connect it to pole 85

2-3 foot - connect to pole 86

Ok, so far so good. Now lets connect our wires and mount the relay to the vehicle.

First off, start by taking out your parking light. Do this one side of the vehicle at a time just so you dont get ahead of yourself. Not sure about the older trucks but on 3rd gens just open the hood and take the one screw out thats holding the parking light in. Then grasp the back edge of the light and pull straight forward. It should jump out of place with a little force.

Next disconnect the the lamp plug that clips to the bulb holder and set the parking light aside. So now you should have a hole in your fender where you parking light used to be and plug with two wires comin out of the hole. Cut back the black rubber on the wiring harness a good 6-8" or so to reveal the wires. There should be two wires:

Green +
White -

Ok now, I made this crappy looking picture with MSPaint to visually show how to wire up the relay. It looks bad but it works really well. Refer to it with my descriptions of wires and pole numbers.

It doesnt matter which side of the vehicle you are on because they will be about the same on each side. Once you have identified the wires, grab your cutters and cut the green wire in half leaving at least 3-4 inches of wire on the bulb side of the wire. Grab the relay that we wired up and connect the 8" wire coming off of pole 87a to the car side of the green wire. Connect the other 8" wire off of the relay (pole 30) to the bulb side of the green wire. Do these connections with either barrel connectors or solder and tape.

***note: In theory, it doesnt matter which side of the wire goes to 87a and which goes to 30 because the relay is just making connection between the two. But for simplicity sake just do it like the tutorial says.

Still with me??? Ok good.

Now before I explain where to mount the relay, we are going to use the mounting location as the ground spot also. So once you figure out the place to mount the relay, make sure and grind down a little bit of paint and allow for a proper ground.

Now to mount the relay. Refer to the picture and put the relay behind the cavity that is part of the headlight mounting assembly. From the side of the vehicle you can get the relay to sit very nicely against this headlight mounting flange while screwing the relay to the inside part of the metal. On the picture, mount it to the left of the small hole inside the red circle. Its like a relay was made to fit right there. But before you mount it, grab the short 3" wire (at pole 85) with the terminal connector on it and put your screw threw the connector before you mount the relay down with the self tapping screw making sure the connector is the part touching the grounding point on the vehicle.

With the last wire, run it down the hole directly beneath the relay. You should be able to see the floor if you look straight down from the relay. Run the wire towards the turn signal connector (wire loom this wire if you want to and use zip ties to secure the wire to the vehicle).

Once youve got the wire down near the turn signal, unplug the connector from the turn signal and pull back some of the black plastic to expose the wires. With your newly ran wire, tap it onto the green wire coming off of the turn signal plug. Do this with either a barrel connector or stripping back the wire and soldering and taping the wire.

Hope you enjoyed my first write up on this forum! If you have any questions, PM me.

Thanks for reading,

I think you have pole 30 and pole 87 reversed in you diagram. See relay wiring link here http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/faq-...w-wire-up.html
