rear axle problems, newbie, about to give up...
Hi everyone ,
there was no section for the presentation so here i am :
paul , 36. in LA area since 2 years, used to have fast japanese cars.
i bought a 93 pickup v6 4wd a few month ago and this is my first off road car.. btw 230 000 miles on it.. engine strong
the truck was cheap and i've been fixing all that was wrong thanks to this forum since i've had it , so thanks guys
but now i'm stuck , i thought the truck was in pretty good shape , but after a long trip it began to make a lot of noise , from the rear diff i think , it's leaking from every seal, and theres a lot of play
the guy before didnt do much about the leaks so it was nearly empty of gear oil... too late when i saw that
so i think the axle is done
i can do a lot of stuff myself , but this is too big for me , and i dont have a garage, no big tools, no welding... and the shops here ask for 1200 for a rebuild.. i cant thats nearly the price of the truck
im trying to find a complete axle ready to plugin, i can do that by myself, but impossible to find the part here in LA . only t100 or tacoma.
so i'm asking you guys what do i do? anyone in the burbank/ culver city ready to help ? i like this truck but the diff is dying, if it breaks the truck goes to the junkyard..
if anyone knows a guy that does mechanics on weekends that'd be great, or find an axle

You shouldn't need big tools, or a welder.
Search around, on craigslist or other forums and find another ifs housing for sale. You don't need the housing, just find someone selling a diff (find out what ratio you have), and grab both rear axle assemblies as well. (up here) you should be able to get a complete ifs rear axle for $150-200.
Honestly, you could probably get away using a tacoma rear axle. It is 3" wider overall though. So you would need to run 1.5" wheel spacers up front if you wanted the width to match. just try to find the same gear ratio you have.

On craiglist there is one , in very bad shape
A toyota part shop has plenty of tacoma axles but its more like 1000$ for a complete... thats why i dont know what to do..

No way that is worth $1000 to me. It is all anout who you know. Try going on facebook or local forums and finding people with "built" toyota wheelers. You should be able to find a stock diff for cheap. Just make sure it is in good condition.
You can buy two of these kits to redo the rear axle wheel bearings. Or find two used ifs shafts and hope those bearings are good too.

Napa auto parts charged me $30/side years ago to press old bearings off and install new ones. The only thing left on the axle shafts would be brake shoes, wheel cylinder and drum. Then basically the axles are new. If you even needed to go that far.
As far as a new differntial that is indeed pricey. So i would try to find used factory differential. Unless you are planning on regearing. Most commonly in your truck would be 4.10 gears, 4.56 gears, or 4.88 gears. If you have a factory 4.88 diff forget about regearing it. You are better off finding another toyota third member and regearing that to 4.88. The factory 4.88 diffs are offset differentiall and the only thing you can do is buy factory toyota 4.88 gears which are expensive.
The only other thing to look out for is v6 and 4cyl differentials. Since these are different. Honestly i dont think it matters which you find, the only main difference i see is the v6 diffs i had all had the plug in the top for the abs sensor. Which you may or may not want to keep.

all right , i found some pick & pull junkyards not too far from my work i will give it a try
what about the t100 axle ? they actually have one but the gear ratio is 3.90 , and mine is 4.30 or 4.56 .. not good i guess ..

i saw on my door the diff code is G284 so it should be a 4.30 ratio right ?
is 4.10 really bad ? what could fit ? i have 31" tires
also how do i know if an axle or just 3rd member is in good shape, or at least better than mine ?
i'm trying to find a local guy that could do this , or help me i will try craiglist..
