One engine I haven't saw on this list is the vw 2.0 8 valve motors that were in golfs and jettas from the 80's up through at least 2005. I actually think they started putting them in some of the lower tier new jettas and golfs. These motors are slow and around 115 HP, but get good mpg and last a ton of miles. They are also not that bad to work on either as I've worked on few.

that golf/jetta engine takes me back to when i owned an audi 100. It had a five cylinder engine which was gokf/jetta engine with extra cylinder. i sold with 440000 miles on clock. burnt no oil started first time and got easy 30mpg.
