Mobile 1 Synthetic Oils

Mobile 1 Synthetic Oils
Hey guys, I've searched through numerous threads and can't find answers to where folks buy synthetic oils for the following:
Transmission
Transfer Case
Front Differential
Rear Differential
I need to change out the oils in a 99 4 Runner and 95 T100 so I'm looking at a good investment.
Reason I'm asking is that I stopped by my local checker auto and wal mart, and they didn't stock all the Mobile 1 oils for what's listed above.
If I'm going to have to search hard and drive to several stores, I'll just switch over to Amsoil completely, including the motor oil.
Stores local to me are:
Checker Auto
Car Quest
Auto Zone
What do you think?
Thanks for your help.

I use M1 15W50 or Redline MT90 in the manual tranny and transfer case, and M1 75W90 gear oil in the diffs.
It is important that you DO NOT USE a GL5 gear oil in the transmission/transfer. GL5 has a high sulfer content, and when mixed with water (coming from the atmosphere), it becomes sulfuric acid, which reacts with the brass transmission synchros.

Unhappy99- Really? Don't use GL-5 in tranny/transfer? How does GL-5 have more sulfur?
Show me an ICP or AA analysis from a laboratory proving this. Otherwise it is hearsay. Also ANY oil will have sulfur I can't see how engine oil would have any less than gear oil, even if it did, I would not expect to see amounts great enough to have the detriment you speak of.
You are advising AGAINST what the factory reccommends for fluids, Without seeing an analysis I would not take this advise.

Toyota's manual trannys will tolerate GL5 oil as well as GL4. The reason to use GL4 in preference to GL5 is that the EP addities in GL5 oil make it slipprier and that makes the synchros slip longer during shifts and take longer to spin their gears up to speed making for more sluggish shifting:

It is true that at one time, older transmissions were affected when GL5 oils first came out, additives in them reacted with the "yellow" metals in the gear box.

Some manufacturers have used engine oil in their transmissions for years, for example, BMW and Honda. Since engine oil doesn't have the sulfur-phosphorus EP additives of Gear oil, synchronizer incompatibility is not an issue. Engine oil does have acid neutralizers needed to combat the acids due to combustion blow-by. These neutralizers futher protect brass sychros.
At the same time, most engine oils are not designed to handle shock as well as Gear oil.

I use M1 75w90 in every gear box, have for a long time. Know many others who do the same. Here's the cheapest place I have found for higher quantities http://store.avlube.com/mob1syngearo.html will be about $90 for a case of 12, including shipping. In fact, in you don't want a full case I'll buy your extras off of you for $8/qt.. how's that?

T-case can take either type of oil. It is non-syncromesh so no worries about GL5 oils. Some folks run a GL4 oil in it in case the seals between the case and tranny leak and you get oil mixing. Most run GL5 oil because it is more readily available. I list the grade and weights of oils I use in mine on the link above.

4Crawler-
So would these Amsoil oils/fluids work:
Transmission: (ATF) Synthetic Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid
Transfer Case: (FGR) Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 75W-90
Front Differential: (FGR) Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 75W-90
Rear Differential: (FGR) Long Life Synthetic Gear Lube SAE 75W-90
Motor Oil: (TSO) Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil
If not, what is your recommendation?
Thanx.

My 5 speed shifted sluggishly (stiff shifting, gears didn't seem to engage well). When I dropped the tranny to do the clutch I drained every drop out of the tranny. You can get another 2 qts out by holding the tranny over a drain pan. Be careful it is incredibly heavy. I refilled with M1 GL5 synthetic and that fixed all my rough shifting problems. As for the synchros not allowing the gears to spin up - that has not been my expeience at all. That said, my tranny may be in very different condition internally than yours. While I had the tranny out I also replaced the bushings on the shifter so that may account for the easier shifting but does not account for the slick way the gears now engage. Everyone who drives my truck loves the way the tranny feels/shifts.
