5speed tranny jammed in reverse?!?!
I got my tranny, and it's jammed in reverse. It will not come out...PERIOD. Even with a prybar. What inside could be causing this?

out....shipping may have locked it up. What in shipping would cause this? Not proper stability during travel? I mean people dont just "toss" around transmissions....do they?
I'm pretty heated.

Alrighty, but what will this do for me? (Filing a claim) I'm pretty sure it was UPS. Is UPS prone to these kinds of errors?
I'm waiting to see what the resulting malfunction is.

As mentioned by others, it could be bound up due to some kind of physical blockage. For trannies that have been sitting around for a long time and kind of rust welded up, I've used kerosene to fill the case and then walked away. Come back in a few days and it becomes loose as a goose.
Keep in mind however that I've done this on very old transmissions like T-18s, I'm not sure if the kerosene would react with the components of a more modern transmission. I don't think it would cause a problem, but I'd check with a rebuilder first. Good luck.

Very smart. I am sure there are several possabilities, but DO NOT do anything to it until you find out what made the problem occur. If you get into it, you will void any warranty either from the seller or shipper.

If this trany has the shifter coming out of the top/rear of the trans, and you can't see any external linkages, most likely the ball end of the shifter in side the trans has jumped between the shift rails and the trans is acutally locked in two gears at the same time. If it is this type of shifter, it is usually very easy to un-stick. All you need to do us remove the shifter. In most cases, you either have a metal cup type retainer around the base of the shifter where it enters the trans. This type usually have to be pressed down against the spring and rotated to release it. Then the shifter will lift straight out. Inside the shifter hole should be three metal shafts with notches in them. They are supposed to be aligned with all three notches together for the trans to be in neutral. What usually can happen is more than one of these shafts get moved out of the neutral position, and the trans becomes locked in two gears at the same time. You would have to use a screwdriver or a pin punch to put all three shafts into the neutral position to unlock the trans and then reinstall the shifter. The problem is that this type of shifter lock-up usually means you have a worn shifter or the bushings that align the shift rails are worn, allowing too much freeplay. If this is a used unit, I would see what type of return policy they have. If that option is not a good one, take it to someone who knows tranys that you can trust and let them un-stuck it for you.

my w56 locked up when a shifter key, (one of three on the synchro drum) fell out due to a broken retainer spring and worn bearings, locked my truck up in 4th gear, could not get it out. Now I have the trans disassembled on the bench and can see the wear and missing parts/broken spring and big gouge in synchro where the key got wedged in the assembly. Amazing part is the gear teeth in the trans are not chipped or broken, they just ground the sucker up into a pulverized powder.

May or may not be what it is. But i replaced my 5 speed in my 83 a couple years ago. When i got it from the shop that rebuilt it and started to put it in I noticed it was locked in gear. A quick call to the guy who sold it to me and i found out they lock it in gear so they could torque something down. Give a call to the place that sold it to you to see if that is the samething you face. My guy said it was common to forget to unlock it. Sorry i dont remember how to unlock it, it was a long time ago.
