1st gen spare tire stowage. What am I missing?

Gents,

I am trying to get my spare set up for the first time. What am I missing that let's the wheel attach to the piece that you crank up?

Thanks.

Spare wheel (supposedly)

Hanging stowage thingy.

Just lean that part over and drop it through the center hole of the wheel. Tab on the left side of your picture will come up through one of your bolt holes to keep it lined up and then you just lift. I see you have a five hole wheel there. Dumb question, but is that what you have on your truck? I personally have never owned a Toyota with five hole wheels. I know my first gen Runner has 6.

Above is correct.

That's a 2WD wheel.

That explains why it didn't fit through the center lol.

I didn't pay much attention and it turns out the previous owner gave me the wrong spare.

Do you guys know if it has to be THE specific 4runner spare rim? Looks like I am headed to the junk yard tomorrow......

A 4x4 truck rim will work.
Just make sure it has the correct back spacing.
Some straight axle 6x5.5 rims will bind on the caliper up front

I didn't think the user name "Crawler85" and 2WD made much sense. Another mystery solved.

I looked at two different ones that I have and it looks like they measure about 5 inches from the inside bolt flange to the inner most part of the rim. They are 6X5.5 pattern and your studs are 12mm. The factory wheels on mine are offset 8mm if they happen to ask you that. A GM 6 hole spare should work between the years 88 and 2013. Earlier ones would probably work but they had 7/16 studs which are a little smaller than 12mm. It has to be at least 15" but a 16" or 17" would be fine if that's all you can find.

FYI, if you mount the spare with the outside down you don't have to lower it to check the air pressure. Unfortunately it also becomes a big bowl for dirt and sand to settle in.

Also, looks like the spare is riding right on the differential cover. Might want to look into that. I'd worry that on a big bump or over time the tire would either dent the diff case or the little brake line bracket would damage the tire. I know on my 4Runner I couldn't get a 33 under the rear because of the space between the diff and the hitch receiver.

It looks like the tire sits against the top of the axle housing... can you get any articulation in there? I wonder if there's any way to push the tire further to the rear for dudes with tube bumpers unlike his...

The pics show decent clearance from the differential and brake linkage. It will be even better after I replace the spring or zuk mod it...

The other pic shows my sag....
