Ticking TC time bomb...
Hey yotatech, first post here. I'm 350 miles away from home for the holidays, and my notorious timing chain guide breaks. 1992 22re Pickup. She's a beaut. I really want to do the rebuild myself but I also don't want to wreck my truck trying to get home to do it. I think by the time I figured out that my guide was broken, it'd been 300 miles or so. Would YOU take your chances on driving 350 miles with this situation if there was a fresh engnbldr kit waiting for you? I know this is a ticking time bomb but I just don't know to what extent.
Thank you in advance!

Driving styles vary. You can learn to keep the chain tight. It's a fine line between bogging it down and keeping it loaded and not using the engine to brake
. My instructions when I learned weren't even that in depth, the old man just says
"you hear that" "which that"
"this" "yeah I hear it sounds like metal on metal"
"yeah it is, don't let it do that"...
If you don't feel comfortable with it don't do it.

Ah, interesting. I didn't know of such a style...thank you for the tip.
I feel like it's fine and I know it's not ideal, but I'm asking because I don't know how stupid it is.

For anyone else who has asked this question and gotten a vague reply, I pushed on 350 miles and all was fine. I did order a timing cover anticipating damage done, and drove carefully like Co_94_PU suggested. It is a strange "feel" thing...

The vague reply is because there is no real right answer. We don't want to say definitely tow it then find out you payed $$$ when the next guy says you could have driven it. And the reverse of you drove it and had it break the cover. Glad you got it home. Lots of threads on here if you need help with the timing chain
