Please help coolant in oil

Please help coolant in oil

I purchased a 1993 22RE truck 3 weeks ago with 135k original miles from the original owner. The truck had a blown head gasket and he sold it to me cheap. Paid a local shop to replace all gaskets and they had the head check for warp. Anyway, they were pouring coolant in the radiator once it was all put back together and coolant was coming out of the oil pan drain plug. Said it would pour out a few minutes after putting in radiator. Anyway, paid him 1200 for the work and I still have the issue. Any ideas? I am very low on money now and really want to be able to drive the truck. Starts right up and runs fine, but haven't drove it. Please help.

I have read about timing chain cover cracks, but wasn't sure what it would be

Pull the valve cover and look closely at the timing chain guide on the driver's side. Look for excessive movement in the chain and/or guide on that side. There are plastic guides that break at the mounting area and will let the timing chain rub against the timing cover. There is a coolant passage there where the timing chain rubs and if it rubs long enough, it will wear through and allow coolant to get into the oil pan. This is more prevalent with the single row timing chains. I would suspect this is the problem more so than a cracked block.

I would hope when taking the Cam Gear off the cam one has to be really dense not to see a bad timing chain .

Unless this was the first 22 R series engine .they had apart

Might have only torqued the head bolts to 55 Foot pounds instead of 65

I wonder were you there during the work and saw the head removed ??

If not I wonder if it was done at all ??

Some stop leak and call it good

You need to take it back and make them make it right. $1200 is about market price for that job and if they never did it correct to start with they need to fix it.

coolant should NEVER be coming out of the oil drain plug.

for $1200, they need to fix it right, like fishguy said.

My guess is the Timing Chain Cover has a hole in it. I would want some one that knows the 22r/e motor and not just a general mechanic. I know several motors and will work on them and then there are other motors that I will not touch unless it is very general repair. Each motor has it own little quirks or secrets to them. Sounds like you went to a general mechanic and he thought it would be an easy $1200.

When sending any truck to a mechanic, make sure he knows that vehicle real well. A lot of shops have a computer program that gives them the most common failures in a particular vehicle so it mostly a guessing game for them.
