I've been messing around with mine and so far no true Horsepower gains. I did the battery swap and got better throttle response, took the fan off and used my electric fans and got maybe 1 hp out of it (the fan clutch was bad). I think I'm gonna ream it out +0.030 and look into a cam

The intake/Battery swap is a must. Did it to my '86 and got 2 more mpg and more snap, and thats with the stock filter! K&N cone might have to be in my near future...

Leave it alone...
The best 22RE is a as-close-to-stock one.
You're just wasting your time and money.
It's only 2.4 LITERS! It's made to go the distance, not get you there quicker.
Physics will tell you you can't get the results you think you can out of this motor...
God, why can't ppl just think of a Toyota as a 4WD Honda Civic with a bed on it?
Why do they want it to pull goose neck trailers and drag race it at the track on weekends?
Hello?
OP, you don't expect a Honda to pull a 25 foot trailer, do you?

There are even companies out there that make the same product, only another color... Cotton/ Gauze with a wax.
I know for a fact my old RE went through the same part of town I had to use a higher gear for after I installed mine...

I do use synthetic oil... Lucas Brand If I can find it. (With the stablizer) If I can't find it I use Castrol
But I am usually running about 97/98 octane... I mix the standard 91 with 101 from a gas station near my house. It's expensive but, I do notice a differance.... The NGK's have been working fine for me... But when I install the MSD I was going to replace them BOSCH (I think I spelled that right)
There are a couple of emissions hoses I have removed, the ones that are on top of the 22re going into the intake. I replaced them with breather Filters and plugged the other ends on my intake... I did notice a difference and It even improoved my 1/4 mile time by 1/2 a second (Just wondering if there were more to remove - seems like there isn't)
But, I do thank you all for your tips!

You will definitely regret using Bosch plugs! Toyos will burn them up!

tune-up
besides the common air and exhaust upgrades, i don't think there's anything i believe has a significant effect.
most important is regular maintenance and to make sure your motor is in good running order (timing etc.). a compression test will let you know if a rebuild is in order.
Not really engine upgrades but running ATs instead of MTs will help street performance (namely mpg) due to lower rolling resistance. And a lighter tire will help acceleration. A narrower tire will help a bit on the freeway.

22re Mods
Im dealing with the same thing.
I am looking to buy a 89 Toyota Ex-cab with a 22re(5-speed)
I know of some pretty good mods for the 3.0L but new to the 22re
I need some help, I want about in the middle of top-end and bottom-end
I 4x4, looking to get 33's with a 6 or 7 inch lift
My dad is in the sport but he drives a Ford
Help me out with some pretty good mods

If you want horsepower, swap in a small block V8.

I am just starting to look into the 22re and older pickups for a project but on the newer trucks a lot of guys do the deck plate mod. I don't see why it wouldn't work here but I'm sure someone can correct that if it's not doable. I was surprised it wasn't mentioned if it is.

About the 2 best mods for a 22re as for power is a cam and header with a 2 1/4 exhaust for the money. Then do the best you can for tuning by adjusting the AFM and bring timing up a bit. Other then that you are talking a lot of money to get one to make any power NA.
The best increase for the money is going turbo.

+1 for the regear. 4.88s for 31s and 5.29s for 33s. This is an expensive project costing upwards of $2000 due to the hours involved in labor... and a shadetree operation can mess it up so be careful if you go this route.
