Head Gasket Gone
Ok now I am depressed. 1987 4runner 22re 210,00o mile and fifth onwer and now my Headgasket is blown. I can get it replaced and the timing chain done since i do not know the whole history of truck for 2300 dollars. Yes I did say wow to this. After speaking with the shop they can install a rebuilt motor for only 800 in labor plus misc supplies. Look on the internet find 22reperformance.com 1600 for a rebuilt. so I can get a rebuilt motor put into the for 2700 roughly. Sounds good. I only paid 1900 for this truck. Is this worth it or should I part this truck out. It ran great until the head gasket. No water in oil coming out of the exhaust. I really dont want to sell but man is it worth it. Any advise guys.

1000 to1500 for a long block, bout the same to have a local shop rebuild yours. install depends on where u r at. here its about 1500 to 1800 (Oklahoma). at your milage i say go cheap and do the gasket and timing yourself or rebuild the whole thing

Do it yourself. Get a Factory Service manual (the real Toyota one, not the haynes/chilton). It takes time but if you follow along you can do it for a few hundred bucks in parts. Lots of good info on this forum and the internet. You'll just need a machine shop to do the head after you remove it.
Good luck!

engnbldr is on ebay, you can find a timing kit and head gasket or a complete engine kit from him, and its not that hard to do most of the work on a toyota except hooking up the vacuum hoses, well where they go. So if you choose to tackle this , get a camera and take a picture of everything that you take off or unhook. And mark all hoses, bag and tag all bolts. Good luck to you
