so ive spent the last few weeks doin research on suspension lifts for my 1999 4Runner Limited. this thread isnt about what the best lifts are and which i should get. my question is about mechanical issues that can be caused by lifting. a buddy of mine told me that lifting them any higher than 2 inches can cause problems with stuff wearing out faster. anyone have any insight on the damages that lifting can cause and how to try and fix it? im wanting to go no higher than 2.5 inches.

Only had a 3" lift on since November so I'm not the best example. The only 'mechanical' issues were it had to be realigned. The fix was get it aligned. The cv boots popped loose. The fix was new clamps.
So far the biggest damage has been to my wallet, though most of the parts I replaced were in actual need of replacing (springs, shocks, tires).

Generally I've read that over 3" is rough on the cv joints and if you've already got the tall springs...

ya my cv's aren't happy but lifetime warranty and easy to replace dont bother me much

Just make sure you get the diff. drop kit also, Ive been lifted 3in for about 50,000 miles no real problems, it will wear on your steering rack a little more with the higher angle of the tie rods and with the bigger wider tires will put added stress on every thing, its no big deal to me cause stuff doesn't last forever guys.

Old cvs at a normal angle the boots get used to that angle over what could be 10+ years. You go and lift it which changes that angle and stresses that old boot and it will leak most likely. New boots or clamps and it's fixed. Annoying yes, major damage no. Max suspension lift is 3" on a 3rd gen 4 Runner.

Just go for the lift man its worth it, yeah you might have problems with your cv boots at first until they get settled at the new angles, i had one of mine that leaked grease for a lil bit, not a big deal. And make sure u get the diff. drop kit it really does make a difference i know cause my buddy has the same lift i do minus the diff drop and he keeps tearing CV boots.

are you gettin the 600lb setup or the 650? that is also the one i have been lookin at as well

yep it woulb be good with a bumper. saw a arb bumper for 500 around my area but have some damage to it

Get the 650's, you'll enjoy them. Im running the original toytec CO's on mine and love the front. Mine are set very low though. I have like 1.75" of lift and running 33's

do you have anything for weight up front with the 650s? also this 4runner is a daily driver as well, are the 650s bouncy when driving? i dont have anything for weight up front yet which is why im hesitant to buy the 650s

this is the post that i was looking for. I have a schrockworks bumper and sliders on the way and now i'm looking at the same one you are. my concerns are if it can be aligned back to specs, ball joint issues, if i need to change the upper control arms and what it will do to all of my steering stuff. I am definitely getting the diff drop kit, i need to replace my ball joints and don't even know if i can get some stronger ones. I have seen ball joint spacers and feel like they would only screw up the ratios even more. let me know what you think.
