1987 4Runner Auto Questions
Hi All,
Total newcomer here!
Picked up a 1987 4Runner 4x4 22R-E, 253000 kms, auto transmission.
Paid $2000 canadian.
Took it in to get oil change and whatnot, and I have a question about some things they noticed with the drivetrain.
They pointed out the following:
(1) Rear Engine Seal Leak
(2) Transfer Case Housing Leak
(3) Oil Pan Heavy Sweat
(4) Both Axel Seals Sweat
(5) Front Differential Heavy Sweat
They said the fluid in both differentials and the transfer case fluids are at a good level. They said the transmission fluid level was good too, but they recommended I replace the transmission fluid.
Should the leaks concern me? How about the "sweating" on the Oil pan and differentials?
Thanks so much! I know I'm going to be having a ton of fun with this unit!

With a 20+ year old vehicle a few leaks are to be expected. I wouldn't worry about the oil pan or the diffs, just check the levels regularly. On an older vehicle you should check the engine oil weekly, until you get an idea of how much your using and then as needed. Check the t-case and diffs once a month until you find out if your losing oil there. The rear engine seal is a big job to replace so if the leak isn't too bad I would just live with it.
As for the tranny fluid if it's brown or smells burnt I would replace it, otherwise just check it regularly.

Hey, same name as me
Thanks for the reply, and the recommendations.
The rear engine seal doesnt even leak enough oil to produce a drip on the ground, so I'm guessing its ok to live with it, as long as I stay on top of checking the oil.
They didnt say the tranny fluid was brown or burnt, they just recommended I change it because of the age of the vehicle and the fact that I have no history on it.
I will stay on top of checking the diffs and t-case... thats the old finger in the hole method correct?

Correct. And if you don't know how old the diff and t-case fluids are it might be worth changing them. Just remember to remove the fill plug first before the drain plug.
