Hey guys,

My 2011 Tacoma V6 developed a disturbing audible whine at 130,000 KM this summer, it is dark amber colour and I neglected to change it although I had swapped every other fluid.., Toyota says replace the pump at $900+ after labour, or try replacing fluid. So I asked what they used and they showed me a bottle of Carquest Power Steering fluid. Replaced the fluid doing several drains and fills, made it quiet for a week or 2 and then came back as loud as always. Found a used replacement pump for $75.00, and ordered the belt well I'm at it, so I guess my Questions is the Car Quest PSF OK too use, I have been less than impressed with my local North Bay, ON., Toyota dealerships dealers or service mechanics. I have a white Taco with Faded paint issues that got polished out of warranty I'm stuck with, so you can understand my issues with the dealer.

Power steering pump replacement pics

Well ended up replacing the PS pump with a $75.00 used replacement with 70,000km off a 2005, went pretty smooth with skid plate removed. Removed the serpentine belt by releasing the belt tensioner, removed x2 -14mm bolts holding the PS pump in place accessible through the pulley holes, I removed the sensor with a 22mm to insure I didn't break it like the donor PS pump, and I removed the high pressure line banjo bolt with a 19mm, removed a few connectors and 1 ground strap bolted on the back of the pump by a 10mm bolt and then snuck the PS pump out past the rad & AC lines on the passenger side engine bay, loosening the AC hard line made this much easier. Good time to inspect all pulleys and replace the serpentine belt, and might aswell replace front diff fluid well your at it only 1 skid plate to go. After install, I filled the reservoir with car quest PS fluid as advised by the dealer, jacked the truck up and turned the wheels back and forth without starting it to get the air out of the lines, after turning full turns both ways 3 times, I topped off the PS reservoir and started the vehicle turning the wheel back and forth again to insure the system was bled and then I lowered the vehicle and test drove it, it should be noted that i flushed the old PS fluid out using the old pump to insure I did not contaminate the replacement pump with old fluid. Don't mind the rust, we live in a major rust belt.

disassembled PS pump

note the ground strap threaded hole

belt routing is tedious
