I'm suffering from horrible gas mileage(stock 4.10 gears on 33s), and i plan to keep these tires or go bigger so i want to re gear. I need help deciding what size tire,gears, and w/wo lockers. I go out on trails and mud probably 2-3 times a month so chime in and give your opinions.

if you plan on going bigger than 33's at least go with a 5.29

On lockers - yes! I think an ideal setup for someone who wheels only occasionally - and especially when mud is your big obstacle and not lifting a wheel - is a True-Trac LSD in the back (helps all around - in the mud, in the rain, on gravel on the road) and an air-locker in the front. This gives you the benefit of the LSD on road and off then being able to lock the front completely when the going gets rough. OTOH, being in Florida you don't need the benefits/lack of drawbacks of a regular auto-locker nearly as much as folks where it snows, but still. A lot of people will say I'm full of it on the TT - but I'll stand by it. Of course ARBs all around (or a Toy e-locker in the back) is pretty bada$$ as well.....

lol. lockers-yes, deff. must have there. as far as gearing, its been answered. its all been answered. this is an easy search too. good luck findin what you need.

edit, also, as for the type of locker, i personally am aiming towards a lockright. search "reasoning for locker". should give you a site with a great price and a solid product.

granted, I have the 3.0 3vze, but the BEST MOD I ever did was to regear (4.88 - 5 spd) and put in a lockright at the same time. No more power issues and unusable 5th gear, and a locker to boot... I picked up front and rear factory used diffs for $225, and a locker for $240 shipped, put them in myself and couldn't be happier, it's like driving a new truck. No kidding...

Re-gear, and add a locker.....

what should i watch for when buying used diffs with lockers? theres a front 2ng gen on here with 5.29 and a lockrite for 375 i think. Its local so im thinking about it.

sounds like a good deal but if your driving around town manual hubs with a front locker i would think is necesarry. but if you already got those go for it.

Why spend the extra money on a selectable locker in front? The only time it would lock was when you were in 4WD. It wouldn't effect anything while driving on the streets. Is there an advantage to being able to lock and unlock it when in 4WD? Thanks

Just an FYI...if you are running larger tires your speedometer/odometer will be off. This will make your miles per tank appear wrong. Not saying gears won't help - but something to think about.

Does it effect the odometer by that much? and if so which way more miles or less miles.

4:88's =33's 5:29= 35's MPH will be off and so will the odometer.

ARB lockers is the best choice if you use it for a daily driver. Not cheap but a solid setup.

I know this is an old thread,but it proves I searched.
Anyway I have 33" mt's and i know thats 4.88's are the recommended gearing. What I want to know is does that take in to account the extra weight of bumpers, sliders, skid plates, winches, trail gear a etc?
Also most of the time i drive my truck i I have 2- 5 people in it with lots of gear or bikes. So I was thinking 5.29's might be a better option.
